Budget upgrade help
Anyone ever an older Deore, circa 1990, to 9 speed? The bike has 130mm spacing at the rear hub. I could spread the stays or just swap on a current 8/9 hub body and redish the wheel. My question is what 7 speed parts have to go and what can stay? This is just a fun bike so I don't want to drop a ton of money. You can buy a Motobecane MTB for under $500 that's actually pretty nice. Thanks

Why do you want to change to 9-speed ? The narrower chain+cog spacing just causes more problems than it's worth . 7-speed xt thumbshifters work great and are lightweight . I wish shimano made 8-speed xt thumbies for my ride.

I agree with BoSoxYacht - - you'll be better off going to 8-speed. A lot of people are fed up with 9 for the reasons he mentioned. But you will still need to modify or change hubs, because your cassette-carrier is not wide enough. If the frame is steel, I see no harm in splaying the dropouts the extra 5mm to fit a 135mm mountain hub. Some 7-speed hubs can be modified, though. For an excellent article that speaks to this very thing, click this link to Sheldon Brown's site.

Look here:
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html
Scroll down to "8 of 9 on 7"
You can install a nine speed cassette minus one cog on to your seven speed freehub. A nine speed shifter and chain is will be needed too.
If you really want nine speed, just have a current road hub (130mm spaced) laced into a mountain rim. Add the cassette of your choice, chain and shifter.

a long time ago there was a company that made a lockring for 7-speed cassettes combined with an 11 tooth cog to make it an 8-speed cassette. I think the company was TNT , it was made of 6al/4v Ti .
