    Cannondale SM1000

    hello folks....
    i have a 1991 (i think) Cannondale SM1000 MTB...
    it is a hardtail without front suspension..... not sure if it was available then?
    anyways, i bought this bike used in 1993 and i have loved it and have ridden it regularily ever since...
    i've replaced cassettes, shifters, bottom bracket, chain... it has been well taken care of...

    i use it for commuting year round and i'm using some studded tires presently...

    anyways, i love this bike and was wondering if anyone else had the same bike or maybe some pix of an SM1000...
    or perhaps some stories of their SM1000...

    plus, does anyone have an idea what this bike would've cost brand new in 1991?

    this is my 91 or 92 beast of the east. It was bought as a frameset and built up, but the bike would have been an m800 I think. I got a warranty upgrade from cannondale on it in '98 and got an F2000 frame and fork.

    Is it a SM1000 or just M1000?
    I had a 92 M2000 which was full rigid (in those days, C'dale used Flexstems for front susp). The 2000 was full XT, with Ritchey cranks and seatpost, Answer ATAC stem and Hyperlight bars.
    The 1000 was basically the same bike, but it was LX. In 92 at least, the 1000 had a nicer paint job, it was a light to dark blue fade.
    The Pepperoni forks were recalled at one point. I think they replaced the AL steerer with a steel one. I eventually put a Manitou 3 on mine. It was great bike.
    I have some early 90's C'dale catalogs if you need to verify parts spec., etc.

    Peperoni Forks! the decal kit I bought when I re-painted my '88 road bike came with the peperoni fork decals, they are still on the forks of my road bike! :-)

    Back in the day, I was a huge C'dale fan and wanted the SM1000 in the worst way.
    But, there was not much use for mountain bike in central Fla. in the early '90s.

    you can get decal kits?
    hmmmm.... if you noticed, my frame is pretty chipped up and scratched...
    i wonder if i should get some decals and repaint my baby?

    never even thought aboot that.
    i always wanted a C'dale too, and i love mine... it's old and a little ugly but it has been so reliable....

    This thread reminds me of my first high-end mtn bike... I had a Cannondale M900 and I thought it was one of the nicest bikes out. my M900 cost me roughly 1000.00 and that was in 95, I believe. I sold it back in 03 and I wish I would have kept it. anyways...

    My Cannondale, now in the bike shop to get refurbished, is an '88. And here I thought I was the only person left on the mountain biking planet riding a dinosaur. I haven't biked in years, and am just now getting back into it as my knees have decided running is a baaaaad idea more than two days a week anymore. I can't even remember what model it is, and will follow up when I get the thing back on Friday.

    In the meantime, I broke out my wife's - - - yes kids - - - Huffy Stalker to tide me over! The rear breaks barely work, the front wheel and seat post are bolt on and not quick release, the grip shift for the front derailer rotates on the bar and I just haven't gotten around to fixing that. It must have cost at LEAST $100, but I'm banking on it holding together until this weekend.

    I'm over here in the UK, so I'll not buy a new bike until we get back unless something very odd happens to the exchange rate! I am, however, keen to get back on the Cannondale.

    wow, an '88....
    is that a MTB or road?
    can you post pictures ( of the cannondale, not the huffy....well, maybe a few of the huffy)....

    on a side note, how much $ would my C'dale SM1000 have been in '91?
    does anyone know? it looks like there was a few models above that, but was it high-end?
    i bought mine around '94 for $500... i had sold my trek 820 antelope for $150, so it cost me about $350 to upgrade... and it's lasted ever since!!

    The Cannondale is a mountain bike. As soon as I get it out of the shop, I'll take some snaps and post them up here if I can figure out how.

    I may post one or two of the Huffy as well.

    Maybe we need to start a sub-genre of mountain biking called the "Who Needs a Suspension Vintage Mountain Bike Club." Our motto could be, "Well sure your bike is nicer than mine, but nobody died of asbestos poinoning before we knew it was bad for us!"

    I'm in! I can break out my '88 Raliegh Chill, complete with rear U brake!

    If I recall, the SM1000 that I was coveting was for sale for $1099.00 at some point during the year.
    I have a couple of friends with the second year of the Rockhopper.

    Picked up the Cannondale on Saturday. It is a '89 Connondale 3.0 series aluminum frame MBT with Suntour derailers for and aft (4050's), a Vetta saddle, Diacomp XCE brakes for and aft, and frigging massive downtube!! The frame is 20". Put a new set of Tioga tires (like I know if they are any good??) on it so it is ready to go. I took the SPDs off and put mortal pedals on as I don't a) have the compatable shoes and b) don't need to learn how to fall at a stand-still while still getting used to the bike.

    If I can figure out how, I'll post some picks. Compared to today's spec'ed out bikes, it has a clean look to it. I have 18 months left in the UK so I reckon I'll not buy a new one bike until I get back, but I'm already dreaming.

    Tomorrow I'll take it out first time. I reckon it will be a quantum leap ahead of the Huffy I had been on. It is a hell of a lot lighter.
