use skin repair cream on the wounds... hopefully that'll minimize scarring.
be sure to read the label, the ones to use say that you CAN put it on cracked or broken skin... otherwise, keep looking !

If the cut is bad enough, get stitches. Minimizes the scar. Keep very clean. Polysporin like fordfasterr said. And eat healthy (more steak/spuds, less chips/booze). Strange how nutrition helps with healing.
Bleeding hurts.

Bones Heal and Chicks Dig Scars!
It's your own fault for not wearing a helmet. It's god's way of saying "You deserved it".

It only took one major crash (on my head and right upper arm; no broken bones, lots of blood and I couldn't really move my arm for a while) to convince me of the need of a helmet (I was riding the world's crappiest bike, at the time there was no money for that either). For whatever reason, I haven't had a bad crash since buying a helmet, but I'm not complaining about it .

Turn's out this wasn't as serious as I thought it was after it first happened. I went to the emergency at the hospital and got my-self checked over. If I do have a concussion it's minor therefor nothing to worry about and I am really impressed with how fast I have healed. I havent had a head injury [ brain ] for over 2 years so I was really up-set after that crash fearing I would have to deal with the side effects of another injury. I still feel different now compared to before the accident but I guess its because I planted my face onto the concrete while not wearing helmet. I think I will try and use my helmet as much as possible in the future.

This thread is worthless without pics!
Here's a small pic of me after my head injury this summer. Fell off a picnic table on my bike and face planted into a wood walkway. I wasn't wearing a helmet, but a normal helmet wouldn't have done much since I hit pretty much on my chin. I don't own a full face, yet. Fractured maxilla, pulverized my nose, knocked out 2 teeth and had a pretty severe concussion. I learned my lesson the hard way.

I am working on it. Your looking pretty bad in your pic dude for sure but I have been worse, just not from MTBing. Did your brain injury changed your life?

BCBike, good to hear that you are feeling better, glad that you did not break your nose.
Any level of brain injury will have a lasting effect, maybe not anything that you can notice now, and perhaps the damage and loss of funtion is something that you will never recognize, but brain injury = damage = diminished capactiy.
I have been violently pro helmet for over 20 years, after I crashed on my rode bike, bounced my head off the curb and spent a night in the hospital with a sever conscusion. The only time you will catch me without a helmet, is rolling around the driveway after adjusting/repairing/changing parts on the bike. I read a study that showed that regardless of the size of the human, (child to adult), regardless of the size of bike in question, (16 -27 in wheel), that falling over while seated on the saddle, bike at a full stop, that falling over and hitting your head was enough to result in a blow that could result in brain damage. Add in the additional force of impact from movement, and your chances of brain damage increase exponentialy.
Helmet, like seat belts, won't prevent all injury, but use of helmets changes the odds in your favor.
I realize that this may come across as a preachy, soapbox message, but it is only intended to give you my views/opinions for possible use in you decision making in regard to helmet usage.
I am sure that at 44 I am older, slower and more risk averse than you are, just so there is no confusion.
