So it seems that a lot of people carry things like a gps or cell phone with them on rides. Is there anything special you do to secure them so they won't get broken in case of a crash? I've been wondering about this because I want to take that kind of stuff with me but I don't want to go down and take out a few hundred dollars of equipment with me.

I have broken a cell phone in a crash. I now carry my new phone in a waterproof hard-case like the "Lens Locker" on this page: https://www.witzprod.com/witzprod/pro...CollectionID=5

It's meant for sunglasses but fits my phone perfectly. Waterproof and crush proof.

The company also makes one meant for cell phones specifically.

I carry a cell, I don't carry anything else, no computer no gps nothing that can break that will be left behind.

Oh and the phone is for work, so I don't pay for it

I just toss my cell in my Forest Hemp and hope I don't land on it. It's a cheap one, no bells and/or whistles, so I don't worry about it. Hell, I didn't even want the color screen, but it's hard to get a decent phone without one nowadays. I don't carry anything else fragile.

It's pretty hard to break things that you carry on your person that way. It's more likely the cellphone/GPS/digitalcamera (I carry and fall on all that crap) will deform the adjacent soft tissue in a crash and cause corresponding injury to the wearer.

Case in point: cell phone antennae between the ribs. Not to be repeated if possible.

In my case, the phone was in my Camelbak. I landed on and tumbled over many large sharp rocks, and one of them happened to destroy my cell phone's screen. I took quite a bit of damage as well. If you're in a bad enough crash to break a cell phone, you may need to call 911 and a working phone is nice to have.

i may be wrong with this one, but, doesnt your cell phone automatically switch to an emergency frequency when you dial 911 so it doesnt matter if there is coverage in your area?

I think it may depend on the phone. I'm not exactly sure how the 911 system works on them but not all phones have it. Older ones don't at least.

The have yet to bring e911 to my area. Not much population in southern WV. I still don't have access to broadband internet either.

my phone goes in the camelbak. i did go over the bars and land on my back, and i fell and rolled about 3 times into a log. the phone is fine. . . but i ride xc so i dont crash all that much, and when i do it isnt really hard.

if you think you might break it get insurence for the phone.

I use a "cage rocket" I got from Nashbar. its cushioned, waterproof and has yet to lose my phone in a crash although I dont recomend leaving it in a hot vehicle..
as far as switching to emergency automatically, if your phone os toast, trail debris or just plain fragged it does no good. also if there is no reception( I run into this on occasion) 911 is of no use

Hey that cage rocket even has my phone in it already. Perfect! lol Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Mostly I just want to take my phone in case something happens. Leaving it in the car wouldn't help me much if something happened on the trail.

You can always keep it in your Camelbak (or whatever) bladder........

ahem. padded camera or cell case, waterproof if you feel it's needed. sits nice and low on the strap. so even if i land on my chest/abdoment, it lands off to the side, and not under me. that's all i have for my camera. sits on my shoulder strap. on the rare rides i carry a cell phone, i just toss it in the main pack body. plenty of crashes/wrecks, and i've yet to kill a phone or camera that way.

i carry a brew along for the high point of many rides, wrapped up in my shell jacket. haven't managed to break one yet. wrap stuff in a plastic bag, and into a spare shirt or whatever, and it'll be fine.

I just stick the cell and my wallet in a ziplock baggy (otherwise unused) and carry in my middle jersey pocket. Even if I do land flat on my back the camelback will take the brunt of it.
