02enduro frame failure??
I went to the shop today to pick up some lube and saw an 02 Enduro for 1299. First of all, is this a good deal, or are there most likely better deals out there. Secondly and most importantly, im aware that the 02 line of enduros were recalled due to a weakspot in the frame. So I went on mtbr and sure enough some people were complaining about that. Does this mean that ALL 02 enduros have this weakspot and are prone to breakage, or did specialized fix the problem and ship out new 02 enduros to the shops?
I ask because I could have enough money fairly quickly to pikc up that bike, but if it is in fact prone to frame failure, I willl definitly put out the extra 400 bucks for the 03 model.

if i were you and that bike fit the bill i'd buy it, but then i'd go ahead and send the bike in on warranty and get it fixed for free and not have to worry about it and save the extra $400

You could ask Specialized if it was the entire '02 year or specific serial numbers. Here is their site :
Specialized
You might want to call them to get a quicker answer so the bike does not sell before you find out. You could also have your LBS call for you and if they are cool they will give you the truth. If you do get it and the frame does give out, Specialized may even replace the frame at no charge but i would want to find out first.

The only way Ill get the bike is if specialized made new 02 enduros to fix the problem. I just cant justify spending over a thousand dollars on something that might break. And its a confidense issue as well; I dont want a bike that when I ride it wondering just when exactly it will break.

well just remember this, with time you will forget how much and how hard it was to earn the money, you will not however in time forget that the bike broke on you and you had to put it in the shop for x weeks

Do some research. It's not hard.

Just out of curiosity, besides the issure with the fram (which btw was replaced with a newer 02 version) what do you guys think abotu this bike? It looks pretty good to me except for one thing. It has a square tapered bottom bracket intead of the splined like on the 03 bike (same model).
Besides that what do you guys think about it?

The Enduro is a great bike. It's a medium travel bike that can handle a lot of abuse! The problem frames were recalled, and the problem taken care of.
If the only difference between the '02 and the '03 is $400, and a square taper bb, I'd definately go with the '02.
Yes, the splined bb is an improvement, but is it worth $400? Not to me. I never really had any problems with a square taper. Granted, I'm not dropping 10' to flat and have never sheared a bb or crank before.
I would get the splined if I were buying a new crank, but if I could get a good deal on a square taper, I wouldn't say no!
Heck, buy the '02, then pull the crank and bb out of it, stick em on eBay, and buy a new XTR or RaceFace Next LP, you'll still be ahead $100 +/- and whatever you sell the other ones for!
