My three choices:

My wife is going to absolutely KILL me about this.

I have narrowed my choices for a FS XC bike down to three bikes.

Which would you guys pick and why?

https://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike...d=1163603&f=14

https://www.giantbicycles.com/us/030....sp?model=11272

https://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike...d=1162600&f=14

I'm trying to spend as little cash as possible, but still want a good bike that I can grow into as my skill increases.

Wow, quite a step above the Y 26! That's awesome.

Just an FYI, the "WSD" on the Fuel EX 7, stands for "Women's Specific Design." Not that it means it is ONLY for women, just that you might find the regaulr EX 7 more comfortable.

I would probably go with the Reign. It's more of an aggressive setup, probably more freeride'ish than the Fuels. But if you are doing more XC, the Fuel might be better for that.

What is your max price and what brands can you get your hands on?

Matt

DAM! I liked that color, too!

Anyhow, I know the Rein is a more agressive setup, but I favor the Trek design, and also like the motion control feature on the Trek bikes.

I dunno, I'm gonna go to the shop on monday, but its like buying a car to me: I GOTTA like the color...but I realize fit comes first. I'm still gonna try the WSD version IF the components are the same..and the bike fits properly. The frame geometry doesn't seem too different.

Anyhow, I know it sounds like I've already made up my mind, but I wanted to get some opinions from people that have kept up with MTB's more than I have.

BTW: Does riding a woman's bike make you a sissy? LMAO!

Oh...MAX price = as little as possible, not willing to spend more than $1900. I'm not gonna be doing too much 'Freeride' stuff...some minor drops and a jumps, etc

Brands I have to choose from: Giant, Trek, Klein, Gary Fisher, Felt, Merlin

I would pick one of the Treks. I just don't really like the Giant frame.

That looks quite solid.

Oh, and does riding a girls bike make you look like a sissy? Ummh.. uhh.. as long as I am in no way affiliated to you! But in all honestly, if it feels better than the regular version, than by all means go for it.

The ONLY reason I'm harping on the Fuel EX7 WSD is the color..lol!

I LOVE that shade of blue...its the same color as my truck

So...you think either the Fuel EX7 or the GaryFisher Cake3 DLX right?

The WSD Trek Fuel comes in three sizes...14, 16, and 18 inch. Does an 18 inch bike fit you? If it does, then go for it.

I would much rather go for a Stumpjumper but you said you are only limited to those brands you stated above. That's too bad...

No, 18 inch frame size. How tall are you? I'm about six feet and I ride a 21 inch Trek.

I've checked...there are no Specialized dealers within 30 miles of me. The bike shops around here only deal in the brands I've listed...which badly cuts down on my selection.

I'm honestly only hung on the WSD bike b/c of the color. The regular EX 7 looks like a good bike.

What about the Gary Fisher Cake?

Also...since its been FOREVER since I bought a new bike, do you haggle like with cars or not? When I bought my Super-V I had boatloads of cash, so I didn't care...but I'm thinking I could maybe shave a few off of a $1900 bike?

The Cake is also a very good bike. Trek owns Gary Fisher and you can notice a pattern where both their components are very similar, if not the same.

I bought my Trek 3700 about a month ago at a Trek Store. At that time, I was deciding on either the 3700 ($300) or the 820 ($240). They were the exact same bike except the 3700 was aluminum and the 820 was steel and furthermore, the 820 cost 60 bucks less. So, I was in the shop moping around trying to decide if the extra 60 bucks was worth it for an aluminum frame instead of a steel frame. I told the salesman who was helping me that I wasn't sure if the extra $60 was worth it and that I was a starving college student ($60 bucks is a lot for a college kid). The salesman was pretty nice and he seemed to understand my budget constraints. So in the end, he decided to give me a $50 discount on the 3700 so I only paid $250 for the aluminum frame. So with all that said, I don't think there is anything wrong with haggling. It doesn't hurt to try right? Even if they don't give you a discount, they might throw in a free accessory or something. So if you feel comfortable haggling, then why not? Heck, I even got a $200 discount on my computer at Best Buy by haggling with the sales representative. As long as the salesperson recieves commission, then they are willing to lower the price for a sale. But remember, this isn't a swap meet or garage sale, so try not to be blunt about it. Ease your desire for a discount smoothly into your conversation with the salesperson.

I was looking at the 820 actually. All of my previous bikes except for the Super-V were Cro-Mo frames. I always rode rigid bikes...and I put them through HELL. The Cro-Mo never gave up.

My first bike was a wal-mart huffy with a cro-mo frame that I took on the same trails I'm now going to be riding. I did some INSANE stuff considering it was a rigid bike. I bent so many forks I could have probably afforded one of the suspension forks (this was back when suspension forks were a brand-new concept). I still have an old silver Moly fork I bent into a "J" shape after taking a huge jump. That was one the three trips to the hospital I made while mountain biking LOL!

I did some stupid stuff on a bike..im surprised im not paralyzed yet honestly....and 99% of it I did on wal-mart bikes with no suspension at all.

I was OBVIOUSLT very pleased with the performance of my Super-V. I would be checking out another Cannondale if it weren't for their goofy "lefty" suspension forks. I just dont trust them. Plus, for the same compenent, Cannondales are MASSIVELY expensive.

P.S. A broken collar bone and 3 cracked ribs hurt like a MOTHER!

Yeah, steel has many advantages over aluminum. Steel bikes last forever...

In my past experiences, steel bikes just have a good feel to them. They have excellent durability, too. I have NEVER cracked a frame...ever. Bent forks..plenty of them...but forks are hella cheaper than a new frame.

Anyhow...I'm gonna go check out the EX bikes Monday and see what fits, etc.

I think I'd go with Trek or Fisher in your situation. Reasonably priced with a pretty good track record. My LBS sells mostly Trek and GF, but they can order pretty much anything. The owner's really cool. I went to his buddy's shop a couple towns over and bought a Kona, tho. If I'd ordered it through my LBS it would've come from the same guy anyway. I'm very happy with my Dawg Deluxe. I also have a '98 SuperV 1000, but I feel like I've kind of outgrown it. The frame on my '95 F700 broke and, to my surprise, Cannondale gave me a warranty replacement frame('06 F400). Too bad the nearest dealer is over 30 miles away. Oops! Sorry for the rambling.

Hmm, I bent my old Schwinn's steel frame(top and down tubes). It was fun, tho. Anyway, good luck, man!

Let me eliminate one of your choices for you, ESPECIALLY since you like it for the color. When I was shopping bikes for my wife, I looked at the 4500, which is the same color as the Fuel WSD you like (Iris Blue).

It DOES NOT look like the color on the website!!!

In actuality, it's more of a lavender, pearly periwinkle. I can almost guarantee it's not the color of your truck.

Anyway, the Trek or the GF are both great choices...go with what feels right.
