specialized hardrock comp

is the specialized hardrock comp a good bike for someone jsut getting into the sport. i went to a local bike shop today and the guy recomeneded it for my price range (500-600 dollars). i was also looking at the trek 4500 and the specialized rockhopper. which do u guys recomend?

the hardrock comp is an excellent choice... my son has one that he has actually outgrown, but he still refuses to give it up.
