I am chuckling because the wire rope barrier is on the uphill side. I can imagine the sign:

"If you MUST leave the trail, please do so to the down-hill side. Please ensure you have checked your parachute prior to leaving the trail, and once you enter into freefall, clear your bicycle prior to activating the rip cord grip. The management."

I'd hit it. It's less risky than crossing a busy intersection, I bet.

I've ridden stuff like that before. After a while, you just get used to it. At least, I did. I think we had rails/ropes on the open side of the trails, however.

As a general rule, the shorter the distance to fall, the faster I go. I wouldn't advise looking down from that one, tho.

Well considering the trail looks fairly smooth I'd say it's all about your "balls". You wouldn't just fall over on that trail if it was surrounded by trees would you?

Check out pictures of the Portal Trail in Moab. That stuff is almost worse, as it is longer and more technical than that trail.

Ok, I will be the first to admit it....I would not ride it, maybe 20 years ago, but not anymore.

The portal trail and the trail in the vid, maybe, but no on the first picture.

I really don't know if I would have the balls to ride any of these trails. They should be easy, just like any other trail. How often do you simply fall over riding a trail? Your mind just plays tricks on you and makes you think it's harder than it really is. But again, I'm not sure if I would ride them. There are plenty of other fun places to ride than are a lot safer.

It's not quite as precipitous as that photo makes it look. I rotated it a bit to level up the horizon to give another perspective on it.

Now it doesn't look like quite so much of a cliff-hanger (but there still is only about 10' of forgiveness if you get pitched ) Camera angles/cropping are a funny thing. Check the cover shot on the Feb. issue of Mountain Bike Action - - looks like a guy on an XC bike plummeting off an uber-steep drop...until you see that the trees in the background are tilted. Trickery!

This one time, on the short loop of Powderface, I was waiting on the downhill side of a short exposed rocky section for the last guy in our group to come by. He had never done the trail before, and came in at Mach 6. He noted the ravine to his immediate right a little too late and went right off the side. His bike caught on a branch that was sticking out, but he went ass over teakettle for 30 feet before grabbing a rock and stopping himself. He missed hitting rocks with his head about 4 times in that short span. Everybody who was on that ride tells the story a little differently, but we all remember it.

the first one was level, just look at the horizon above the waterline. The river/lake/whatever is moving at a 45 degree angle to the camera. If you doubt this, look at the pine tree. Trees grow straight and riders ride level (usually)

Makes sense to have the fence on the inside. If you have it on the outside and grab on while slipping (likely a hikers trail) you would be hanging off the side

It looks like a bad place to get caught in your pedals. I think I would get off the bike and walk in that situation.

Oh please, I ride things like that every day here in oklahoma. The only real difference (if you could even call it a difference) is that instead of several hundred feet of straight drop, we have flat, level ground, with scrub brush to break the fall.
