Rear derailleur shopping

Well its finally time to get a new derailleur for my old '98 Moab. I've been running the LX that came on it since it was new and its past due for a replacement. I got it sucked into my spokes about a year ago, and it hasn't quite shifted the same since, plus the pulleys look like my dog chewed on them. So I am looking for some opinions here on what to get. First of all what am I going to gain by getting an XT derailleur? What is different on that from the LX? Would it be worth it go all the way up to XTR? How about getting a used one? I've heard that the old shimano stuff is better than the new stuff, would a used XT or XTR be better than getting a new LX for about the same price? So many choices!

old stuff better than the new stuff? i dont know about that... otherwise, by getting XT over LX you would be getting a lighter derrailleur. if you get XTR, you would get better shifting and lighter weight. if i were you, i would go with LX or XT. XTR seems overkill. i just upgraded from LX to XT this morning and got nice crisp shifting. its fabulous.

Get an older XT like a RD-M740 with the GS cage. This was a great derailleur. Originally said 8spd. I run it with nine and it works better that the newer XT RD-M760's that I have put on two of my kids bikes.

I would go with XT. On JensonUSA.com you can get a 2003 for $39. That is what i did and it has been great.
