Do you have to buy a whole chain and take links out of it or can you buy chain links seperatly?

You can get link pins seperately, but as for the links themselves, I don't think so. Your lbs will probably have some going spare though.

Seprately. My LBS sells them for $1.75/piece.

EDIT- As far as links, I don't think you can purchase more, but pins, yes you can buy more.
