Where could I find an SRAM chain online for 15-20$?

My friend just broke his derailleur and he needs a new chain so I said I'd hook him up on either an LX or XT derailleur (he went LX because it was 10$ cheaper) and a 15$ LX chain but really did want SRAM because of Powerlink but it was all in the 25-30$ price range and he doesn't really want to spend more than 50$ on such an upgrade.

Any places to snatch an SRAM chain for under 20$? It can be 8 speed or 9 speed (I can just take a few links off the 9 speed to make it 8 speed ready right?)

Check out www.qbike.com Aren't the chains of different widths? I'm not positive though.

8-speed and 9-speed chains differ in width, so you can't necessarily use a 9-speed chain on an 8-speed setup. That said, I've used a 9-speed chain on an 8-speed crank successfully... but I haven't tried it on an 8-speed cassette (I swapped a 9-speed cassette onto the bike for a bit).

No, don't put a 9 speed chain on 8 speed drivetrain (it doesn't work vice-versa either.) Cranks don't really matter though, most are 8/9 speed compatible.

Yeah I think I'm just gonna get him an SRAM PC-58/68, the Blue Sky Cycling 58 looks good enough or else I can just order the PC68 for 20$ at JensonUsa.

By the time you ship that it'll be within pennies of your LBS. Just support a local business for crying out loud.

Chone 04-28-06 09:25 PM

I already supported a local business, with 1050$ (+tax) to be exact and its for my friend who doesn't want to get ripped off by the prices of derailleurs and chains here.
