First Build Nearly Complete
Well, I'll start off by saying that this is a great site with a lot of valuable information. The search button was definitely my friend!
I started riding a mountain bike about a year and a half ago. I didn't know I would enjoy it as much as I have (I rode BMX bikes growing up), so I bought a cheap Mongoose from the local sporting goods store. After about 10 rides at the local trails the bike was toast. That is when I started researching about mountain bikes, mainly on this site.
I have been slowly buying parts over the past 9 months and finished ordering everything this past Thursday. I spent today assembling everything that has been shipped to me. I am still waitng for the UPS man to bring my cranks and new seat.
Basically this build has been an exercise in budget restraint. I searched for the lowest price on each part and I think I did reasonably well.
Parts...
Frame: Caloi aluminum
Fork: Manitou Axel Elite
Wheelset: Sun RhynoLites laced to Shimano LX hubs
Crankset: FSA V-drive MegaExo (not pictured)
Pedals: Primo Super Tenderizers (not pictured)
Front Derailleur: Sram X-Gen
Rear Derailleur: Sram X.7
Shifters Sram X.7 triggers
Cassette: Sram Powerglide II PG950
Chain: Sram PC-950 (not pictured)
Brakes: Avid BB7
Levers: Avid Speed Dial 7
Headset: Cane Creek C-4
Stem: Kore Lite 3
Bars: Kore Lite 3
Grips: Race Face Good N Evils
Seatpost: Sette APX Alloy
Seat: OEM Motobecane (not pictured)
Tires: Panaracer Fire XC Pro
The seat will be black/red, the cranks black, and the pedals red. I think the look will come together quite nicely.
I have had fun doing this project and can't wait for the last bits to come in so I can take her out for a ride!! I am glad I built instead of buying a bike, because I learned alot, had fun, and nobody else has one
I give an update when I get her finished.
Let me know what you think, good or bad.

looks good. Pull those canti/V brake bosses off for cleanliness.
Just for kicks, add up the cost of all the parts you purchased (including shipping!), and see if you came under the cost of a "off the peg" built bike.
I usually build my bikes from scratch, but I rarely save that much money when all is said and done.

Looks good. I'm not a big fan of the colored sidewalls on tires I like black. Thats a really nice looking paint job on the frame and a good build sheet for your first good bike. Make sure you post some pics when its done and tell us how it rides.

Very nice. The first pic looks odd. It looks like the seat tube ends right at the front deraileur becasue of the reflection on the guide looks like grass. Weird.

one less horse
If you havent thought of it already, it'd probably be a good idea to get that bb shell faced, esp. if you're running an X-type.
Nice looking bike.
