Are bent chainring teeth a common occurence?

Are bent chainring teeth a common occurence?
I just noticed one of the tooth on my largest ring is bent (enough to make the chain skip and drop to the 2nd ring), is this common or should I take my problem to my LBS and have them swap my chain ring under warranty. I mean what could have caused the tooth to bend?
I haven't crashed or anything, I have been practicing my bunnyhops though but I would think a ring tooth to be the last thing to bend from abusing the bike.

on the largest ring? It could be due to popping the front wheel over a log and not getting the back wheel up quick enough, or the same thing on a high drop off...
You can usually fix it with a good pair of pliers, but if they're gonna replace it for free - then go for it

And yeah, I'm planning on getting a bashguard real soon.
I used some pliers and a hammer and put the tooth back on line, seems to be working fine for now... but I can't imagine what I could have done to bend a tooth just riding around my house...

Use a rock to hit it back in place.. while on the trail and have no other means of repairing it.

anyway, the beauty of a steel big ring is that it can be bend back into shape without the danger of cracking it like an aluminum ring. i used to hit my bontrager cranks on rocks, logs, ledges, etc. and it would come out looking like some kind of sculpture. a few mins with a crescent wrench put it back in order. its like the rotor truing method.
