Today two of my friends made some kind of chain tensioner or whataver, its incredibly hard to explain but my friend says it protects the derailleur from being snapped by the chain or something like that, wasn't paying attention really, well its hard to explain with words so here it is, an incredibly bad drawn picture of the mod, I think its fairly clear.

What your talking about is a Chain Tensioner.
Its too keep the chain tight so you wont skip gears during a pedal stroke.
I use this one.

if you already have a derailleur then a chain tensioner adds drag and that is all
that diagram whatever is between the derailleur and front chainrings will cause
crappy shifting in the rear. the chain needs to have freeplay from the pulley
to the crank in order to shift correctly
if you are downhilling you use chainring guides
if you are SS then you use the doodad pictured above...in place of a deraillleur
a chain of proper length matched with a good derailleur setup and b-tensioner
does not need anything else [unless downhilling or stunting]
