Build ideas needed

Okay, I have in my posession a 2005 VooDoo Shango jump frame.

I want to build it up as an all-purpose mtb to be mainly used for trialsy urban and dirt jumps, but I'm really needing some inspiration here. I have a bunch of parts lying around I would really like to utilize to save some coin. These include the 03 Z1 FR QR20 (130 mm) off my Enduro, Syncros Revolution tubular cromo cranks w/ RF BB, and a pair of Mavic D521 Ceramics (front hub exploded, rear is a Ringle Super8 - non disc).

I'll also use an Azonic Shorty stem, and I have plenty of pedals to choose from. I also have some XTR V-brakes, but the Marzocchi fork is not V-compatible. Actually, I also have a surly fork, so I could go full rigid and V's if I had to. (Oh, the horror.)

Anyway, I'm torn on a couple things. Should go singlespeed or 1x8? I already have a cassette, shifter, and XT derailleur, so to go geared, I'd only have to get a chainguide/bashring setup, so the cost difference wouldn't be too painful. What would I need to get to go singlespeed? Is it just some sort of spacer kit for the rear hub? Do I have to buy a cog?

I'm also considering Magura hydraulic rim brakes in order to salvage my existing 1 and a half wheels, but that may be faulty reasoning. I suspect new hubs and disc brakes would serve me better in the long run.

I don't know, just throwing some ideas out there, and I'd appreciate any input you guys have to offer to getting this thing kickstarted.

How would you build it?

I'd go singlespeed.
You can use pvc pipe as spacers, and cogs go for $3,$4. Or you can cheat that by breaking apart the cassette. If the drop outs are sliding, you won't need a chain tensioner.
For the fork I'd go with the Z1.

Regarding the wheels, I'd get new disc compatible hubs.

Since you have a 9 spd already...single -kinda trialsy.
Disc front brake -rigid fork. BB skid plate.......Hookworms.

If you have to use a rear V-caliper, I've seen rims sanded with a grinder and tar applied.
Noisy, but solid enough.

Neat looking frame. Small toptube -chromoly?
Naw...nobody rides that old ferrous crap anymore.

I need a winter build project\new frame.

Oh man........the things I could put in here. Gastros not a beginner but he does ride like one. If he keeps working at it he'll be able to pedal and stay upright with no training wheels by christmas. They have really done a lot for him down at that clinic,I can hardly tell that he hit his head at all.

I'm still debating this whole singlespeed thing - I rode ss for years, back when they called it BMX. Why should I sacrifice the versatility of 1X8? Weight is not an issue - the frame is 7 lbs of straight gauge chromoly. If I do go geared, it'll probably be a 36T front, 12-21 rear with an Ultegra derailleur and an MRP...about as low profile as it gets.

I will probably end up lacing a Ringle rear hub (unless anyone knows of another high engagement point hub that's not Hadley or King?), to the D521's and throwing some Hayes Nines on there to handle braking duties.
Also, does anyone have experience with Larsen TT's as an all around tire?

After all that, I will take off my training wheels and learn to ride my big boy bike.

Larsons are good in the dry but they don't hook up too well in mud. That won't be much of an issue I don't think. I think it's great that your gonna take that big step with the training wheels.

Try Lopes bling-bling dual, they don't wear much on pavement. They're ok in mud.

hey guys-ok i actually have a voodoo shango-i've ridden it for about 10 months now-nice frame-but its a chunk-you can beat it with a hammer and not hurt it though-anyway-i'm runnin holy rollers which i highly suggest-but i would stay away from a rigid fork-i have a khs dirt fork on there now which is suspension corrected at 80mm and my bike is still runnin about a 72 degree head angle-wayyyyyy to steep-this bike needs at least a 100mm fork-anyway i got used to it but i am about to put a pike on there with lock out which should allow me to ride anything. The SS dropouts are very cool but can be finicky-i've already gone through a set of aluminum dropouts cuz aluminum sux!(one stripped out when the frame arrived bent from shipping and the other bent in a crash making disc brakes drag)-i also put discs on about 6 weeks ago and will never go back-trials action was almost impossible with this chunk of a bike with only v-bakes to stop-i rode more street and dirt jump but still wanted suthin with more oooomh-and got that with the discs-i would stay away from the hs-33's because i constantly knocked my rims out of true ( Sun BMF's no less)-and the hs-33s would drag like my vbrakes did-i'm running SS right now-25/14 no less and it feels exactly like a bmx bike-i've had no problem with the SS and it is super relaible but i'm gunna put a 1x9 setup on when i scrounge up some more dough so i can trailride this beast-those are my suggestions to tame this frame-she is strong and not light-take that into consideration for part choices-if you want pix of my ride check out www.unrealcycles.com and search the gallery for the voodoo shango-hope this helps-email me with questions

I've still got it, I have been lax however. Still need to finish building the front wheel and some driveline tuning remains as well. Everything I listed above is pretty much the same as I planned - sticking with rear V-brake only for now, 1X8, Larsen TT's, Marzocchi Z1FR.

Thanks for your input hardtailrider66. I will keep an eye on those dropouts - Konarider24 mentioned that as a potential issue as well in another thread I think.
