Importance of foot position?

I've recently been enlightened into the importance of foot position for TRIALS and I definitely got more balance, bounce and overall comfort when putting my feet way back, but I'm wondering... is this a favorable position for other kinds of riding too?

For xc, road, and most other types of riding the spindle of the pedal should go across the ball of your foot (or pretty close).

Its personal preference.

Due to the size of my feet if I ride on the ball the leverage created on my ankles is almost painful so I tend to ride a little bit more to the middle

It's no wonder you are so lonely that you sleep with your chain . Do you have balance problems too ?
