Please help very frustrated.

Ok so I havn't even got to ride my new marin rocky ridge without thebrakes rubbing. I tried the technique of loosining the mounting screws and squeezing the brake lever to get them centered and then tightening them back up while squeezing the lever, and it didnt work. And now the back brake rubs. they are hayes nines hydraulic disc brakes. im thinking i should have the lbs do it? urgg im so frustrated i wanna ride my bike problem free.

That worked like a champ for me as well. My Nines are perfect now.

I find the 9's sometimes have one piston that doesn't retract all the way and screws up the alignment. I just eye balled it through the looking window at the top.

I found gunk inside my brakes when I was having a problem - mud or something. Once it cleaned it out and adjusted them - they were perfect. Until then, they would start out okay, but after applying the brakes a few times, they would start rubbing.

+1 +1 +1.

Hayes Nine's will have a tendency to stuff up. The pistons especially will be the main problem. Heck we were selling a Trek 6700 last Saturday with Hayes Nine XC and it had never been used and already the left piston on the front brake wasn't moving!

When they are adjusted probalby they are fine, but they dont stay that for long.

chmteck - Check to see when you squeeze the lever that both pistons 'push out'. If you see the rotor being pushed to one side then you probalby have a 'stuck' piston. You will need to 'un-stick' it, by either holding the other piston down and pumping the lever carefully or lubing the piston. However i suggest you just take it to you LBS if you try the 'business card + re-centering' technique dosn't work.

im sick of these brakes already, yes the piston on the left side of ther front is sticking, it doesnt retract all the way. same thing is happening with theback. I didnt get an $1100 bike to have that problem, im pissed. I havn't got to ride my bike problem free and have been riding around on a rockhopper sport from like 1998. Im bout to buy new disc brakes, someone suggest some VERY nice brakes. anyone want these 9's u can take them off my hands for cheap/

You would very un-wise to just get new brakes. All you need to do is get them fixed. Then see how they go, they are dam good brakes when they work, but when they dont they can be frustrating. Just fix them and ride them, you will find sometimes that hydraullics will sort them self out.

Have you even tried the busniess card trick and re-centering yet?

Yeh sounds like a sticky piston...i would be pissed too if the bike was new. Dont worry about it though, its easily fixed. It seems that around the piston will just need a bit of lubing with Dot 4 fluid. I suggest you just go down to the LBS and ask them to have a quick check and maybe lube the piston that is not retracting.

Just dont listen to them when they say 'rubbing is normal', or 'hydruallics will sort them selves out, just keep riding it'. Good luck, sorry to here. I'm not sure how much they will charge.

Go out and get some piece'o'crap Avid Juicy's. Those stupid things (worthless as they are) have worked for me from day 1 until now with very little problem.

Okay I was being sarcastic, but seriously...have your LBS work you a trade for those Hayes and get in to some Avid's.

Very powerful and probably the easiest to set up and bleed.

You can't go wrong.
