Here's a little tip....I built a bunch of stuff behind my house..I had no idea how to do it either. Instead of waisting trees or what ever go to consruction sites and go dumpster diving....man you can't believe the wood they toss out! That way it's free....and if you mess it up, no worries just go get more!ha ha ha (oh and you save a few trees in the process!
As soon as I find some pics of the stuff we had built I'll post em.
On width...go with what ever you feel comfortable with. There's some sections that are as wide a just a thin log and others that were as wide as 1.5 feet(that's where our roller coaster was)
Sorry I can't help you to much with the teeter totter. Just make sure you have one end heavier/longer than the other so it drops back after you ride over it.
