I've bought them from my LBS, Marseille Bicycle here in Montreal (https://www.marseillebicycle.com/index.html) and from Mountain Equipment Coop.

Why would anyone buy a chain online? Even if you got it super cheap, shipping is expensive. That seems redundant, unless you live in the middle of nowhere. It's faster, and probably LESS expensive to just buy one at a LBS.

It depends on the quality chain you are buying.

Yes actually, pricepoint looks like a nice place. I just wanted people to stop posting LBS.

Chains seem to be one of those things the local guys will overcharge you off on. My local guys charge $20 for a $10 chain. It is a business. I SHOULD try to dicker with them over this though. I've had pretty good success in "guessing" prices on non-stock parts that they order. The fact that the thing does not have a price sticker on it means it's inherently negotiable. Typically, if you can quote what it would cost from the online guy plus shipping, they will meet that price. They will simply wait to order it until they have enough to buy from that particular supplier (saves on shipping).

Two things a MTB should have in his toolkit is a chain checker and his NEXT chain. Change the chain as soon as it shows wear. If you don't, you will wear in your chainrings and your cassette. Compared to those to items, chains are CHEAP. Buy them online to keep the cost down since if you buy multiple chains you pay for shipping just once.

The other benefit of frequent chain changes is the pitch on all your equipment will be the same. If you allow a chain to wear and grind your cassette/rings to an enlongated pitch through riding, that equipment will become incompatible with your other gear. This is critical if you intend to keep more than one wheelset laying around. The cassette on your second wheelset must have the same pitch as the other. The way to keep it this way is frequent chain changes.

Honestly, whenever I order online I search the inventory for anything I might need and get lots of things shipped at once as often the shipping is just a flat fee.

BTW, try www.cambriabike.com. They have a nice bargain bin to sort through that has some killer deals. Very prompt service. Very large selection. WAY bigger than Pricepoints. Plus they will pricematch pretty much anything based on Pricepoint.com or whoever.
