Clipless pedal choice...Crank Bros vs Time

Ok so I have a Cannondale Rush 800 on order with my LBS...taking longer to get here than I would like but whatever, apparently C'Dale was out of them and is building it up now. So anyway I have to decide what to do about the pedals. The Rush comes with Crank Bros Eggbeaters but I currently run Time ATAC Aliums on my commuter so I want to pick one direction to go so as not to have 3 pedal systems (have a roadie with SPD-SLs). So I figure I can get another set of Crank Bros...Smarties maybe for my commuter and dump my old (they are pretty beat) Aliums, or I could trade in the Eggbeaters and get a Set of ATAC XS for the Rush. Any particular reason to go one way or the other?

I have Time atac's. I love the pedals because of their performance in mud.

The eggbeaters are apparently just as good. They are also significantly lighter. Depending on which models, you can save almost a pound of weight by going with the eggbeaters. Eggbeaters are also fully rebuildable, I'm not sure if the time's are.

I think my next pedals will be eggbeaters. But like I said, the time's are great.

:)

I personally love my eggbeaters, I have been using them for years with no problems. Unless they quit making them I will continue to run them on my mtb as long as I ride. Now, with that said I also know a lot of people that love their Time's so I really don't think you are going to go wrong either way. I believe my deciding factor would be wether or not your lbs will possibly take the new eggbeaters that are coming with your bike as trade in or partial trade in towards a second set of times.

I haven't had any problems with my eggbeaters at all, They are my favorite pedals I've used on my mountain bike. I liked my ATACs as well but after I got eggbeaters I was sold. their performance in mud is amazing, and they're also lightweight and sturdy. The times are very good pedals but I really think that the eggbeaters are the best thing out there for xc type riding.

I love my EBs and have converted three friends to use them as well. Great pedals.

I run ATACs on my titus and Aliums on my tourer. You can't go wrong with em.
Eggbeaters look good too, buyt there's something to be said for sticking with what you know. You know exactly where Time's release now, while you'll have to learn the subtle differences of the eggbeaters.

Grasschopper 07-06-06 06:45 PM

Pretty much sounds like a coin flip at this point...I think I might give the EBs a shot and buy the Smarties for the Commuter since they are only like $50 it wont be a big loss and I am sure they wont be bad.

Choppah,

If you decide to go the time route, I'll buy those eb's off ya for Mara. I just put eb's on the Dawg and ditched the Shimano's...wow, do I like the eggs! Much smoother entry/release compared to Shimano's.

Bud of mine rides the Times and won't give them up either. I think you should go time and sell me the eb's cheap <EFG>

Grasschopper 07-07-06 07:26 AM

Hey Matt,

Let me see what The Bicycle Shop will sell me the Time ATAC XS for and we can talk about the EBs. I think I will need like $50 for them...can you do that or is that too steep?

Grasschopper 07-07-06 12:37 PM

Well end of story, my LBS offered a straight swap for a set of Time ATAC XE pedals so no additional out of pocket expense. Good deal...Sorry Goat.

Too Rass Goat 07-08-06 06:06 AM

bahhhhhhhhh....

No worries, I'll get them somewhere for $50-$60. She hates these welgos and constantly sticks in the left pedal. She wants red pedals to match all the red bling she has going on...you know "women", lol. I keep finding her deals on eb c's and she replies "but they don't match", ugh. Still looking for red candy c's, might just go for the smarties soon.

For what it's worth I hated my short stint on CB Candy's. Back on Shimano now (540) and much happier.

DrugCoder 07-10-06 01:31 PM

When you guys talk about your EB's, what models do you have? Any preferences between the Candy C's and the Smarty's?

C Law 07-10-06 03:04 PM

^ actually, eggbeaters ( in all their different flavors)are a different model of pedal from the candy and the smarty. I would assume when people talk about eggbeaters, they are talking about eggbeaters and not the other styles of Crank Brothers pedals.

DrugCoder 07-10-06 03:24 PM

In that case, what is everyones opinion on the candys and the smartys?

WHy? I am trying to decide between the two and hearing what people like/dislike is helping me decide what would work for me

Nahh, they're all pretty much egg beaters. They all work about the same way. Some of them have some degree of platform (Smarty, Candies, Mallets). The materials in the mechanisms and platforms vary, but they all work pretty much the same. Four sided entry. In the platform models, the mechanism spin independent of the platform so you can still enter it the same way as a bare egg-beater (stomp, push, pull, wiggle, whatever).

The only "different" pedal they have is the 50/50 which is a flat (no clips).

Yeah all the pedals (except 50 50's) are just eggbeaters with platforms around them. I just got a set of chromoly eggbeaters and I love them.

FatBomber 07-17-06 08:10 AM

I have a friend on candies and he is not happy with them. He has trouble getting into them because the plastic platform gets into the way. I have regular EBs and I have no such trouble.
