squishy forks, used vs new? under 200$

So I upgrade 98% of my bike and found that I have parts to almost completely build another bike. I acquired a frame, but now the forks is another major investment. what are peeps opinion on use vs new. Is it better to get a used mid end forks or get a new bottom end forks. My limit is 200$ any suggestions? I mostly do XC with very light freeride, frame is 16". I am 155 lbs. what are the factors that i should be considering?

thanks,

For under $200 you will have to go used, I don't know of any forks underneath that range, although I don't know much about fork pricing, but I know that they don't come that cheap. Used for sure, just make sure its in good condition. Look at the stanchins and make sure there are no cracks, someone already tried to fool one of my friends buy selling him a fork with a cracked stanchin.

I don't think I spelled "Stanchins" right, how do I spell them?

Get a used fork off of ebay. Z1's and All mountains would probably suit you best. I see them go for around 200-250 all the time.

Look for Marz oil bath forks. Damn near indestructable.
I'd avoid air forks used.
Also make sure the head tube is nopt cut too short for you.
Honestly, i'd save up some more cash.

other cheap new forks

2005 Nixon Comp = 199.98
Nixon stance static = 194
manitou axel elite = 80
axel super = 125
rock shock pilot SL = 199

would any of these work, or still use z1 better deal?

thanks,

I have never heard anything bad about the Nixon's. But I have never heard anything good about them either.

People, XC forks wont do. Stop offering him judy's and such, he's into freeride too. Buy a fork on ebay, a Marzocchi All mountain fork would do fine. Z1's would work fine too.

Umm, considering he said he does "mostly XC", the Judy would be fine as a budget fork. As far as freeriding goes, I could freeride on a rigid fork....so his description leaves a whole lot open to interpretation.

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions. I do a little freeriding (or tries to) because I think it helps build balance for xcing. but it's minimal, like 3ft drops, riding up/down stairs, hop in place, indo etc. usually at the local park

I was really thinking about doing the XC thing, like the Reba, or the fox float, or Sid. but today i was at the local performance bike shop and they had a Marzzochi all mountain 3 on sale, i picked it up for 180$ brand new with 10% off on top of that. ($162) it was a great deal, however, it's not v-brake compat. /cry

now the question is = do i return it and look for other forks or upgrade from v-breaks /argh... so much $$$

/cry/cry/cry

I just picked up a Magura Asgard fork from ebay for $199. It feels just like a marz, I love it.

Edit: It has brake bosses, too.
