Bicycles in Space?

My roommate suggested the idea. All of the current plans for travelling to Mars seem to include multimillion dollar, ultra-hightech rovers that make the moon rover look like an erector toy. NASA would spend millions more on RD to make it as lightweight and reliable as possible, yet still able to move astronauts around at a reasonable pace.
Yet, bike companies have already spent millions on RD to create a product that is fast, reliable and light, AND can be had for $2000-$3000. Why haven't they considered this? They claim it's the spacesuits. Pretty weak cover story if you ask me. :irritated

It would be interesting to see someone pedalling in a space suit in dirt. Funny if you ask me, and damn near impossible..

Better yet why not mx bikes...no pedalling then, and loads of fun

mx = motocross?
They've got this crazy idea that there's a lot of CO2 on mars, so the EPA doesn't allow any high emissions vehicle like that on the planet in order to control global warming. So far, it doesn't seem to have worked.
Yeah, it would be really cool to motocross on mars. Imagine the jumps you could make in 0.38 gravity

My hundredth post...whoohoo. :fun:

We've already messed up our planet as it is ... we have no business doing the same to mars ... plus I don't think there's oxygen up there to combust anyways ...

Yeah I am all for your idea! I guess non-bikers have claimed their spot, sux. I don't like those kind of people who reject all the good ideas.

Somehow I can't imagine sitting on a bike seat and pedalling in a heavy, airtight, full-body diaper......

If anyone remembers Heinlein's "The Rolling Stones" (written in the mid-Fifties) the teenage heroes, Castor and Pollux Stone, hoped to make a killing transporting a load of used bicycles to Mars, fixing them up enroute, and then selling them for use by tourists.

I seem to recall another novel about prospectors on Mars using big-tired bikes in much the same way the archetype Wile West prospectors used their mules, but I'm blanking on any further detail.
