    stinking STINKING SNOW!!!

I knew building a dh bike in the dead of winter might not be the best time, but we had a very mild winter all the weeks I was ordering parts and putting together the new ride. And just about the time I got it rolling it got cold and started snowing every few days. Anybody in the warm areas have a spare room they can rent me for a few weeks?

Thanks for the offer danka, but I really had my sights set on something a little further south

I took that pic this morning, we had about an inch then. I walked out to the shop just now to turn on the heat and we're up to about 7". I figure I can spend the day out there listening to some tunes and catching up on some bike maintenance.

Not so bad after all, my wife could tell how bummed I was (I had a trip planned) so she gave me my b'day present early- a spankin' new 24" BMX frame. Now I can go out and see how many parts I can dig up for it, then spend the rest of the day surfing the net for new parts

I know what you mean. I bent a rim Thursday, took it to the shop, getting 2 new ones and some service done. They said pick it up Friday after 5. Well it snowed Friday. I had to go home Saturday. Will be going back to my parents this Thursday to pick up the bike. Hopefully no more snow so I can ride Friday and Saturday.

    MikeOK,

I know what it feels like. Up here in NH, we have close to a foot and a half of snow, with more already forecasted on the way. Most trails are now covered too deep to have much fun, so I'm stuck on the snowmobile/rail trails that get more use in the wintertime. I just tried out my first attempt at a home-made studded tire yesterday and it worked great. The snowbanks are too big in most areas to even safely take out the road bike. I hope it melts fast in spring, but until then I'll just have to wait. It would be much easier with a new bike to build up though.

Hey MikeOK, I know how you feel. We had several great riding days in a row here in SW Missouri. Then snow on Thursday and more snow today.

We've been getting steady snow here too, so my solution was to get out the xc skiis and hit the trails early this morning. The xc riding trails make perfect ski trails in the winter, so we take full advantage of it.

This morning we were at the trailhead at 9:00 a.m. and the 4th vehicle there. Not a soul in sight. It was a calm -3C and snowing lightly...we couldn't ask for better conditions. The best part was we were the first to make tracks on the trail we chose, so we had it all to ourselves!

The trails are beautiful in the summer, but even more so in the winter. If I can't ride them, then I ski them!

If it would snow, I could at least go X-C skiing. As it now stands, it is just too cold to ride. The singlespeed I just built up sits unridden and I'm confined to the trainer for the interim.

Our mild early winter turned me into a cold weather sissy! At least those of you in the mountains can invest in a set of XC ski's, that's something I always wanted to do. I very nearly took a job near Denver last year, one of the main reasons I wanted to go was to mtn bike all summer, and XC ski all winter. Here when we get a snow deep enough to XC ski, it usually only lasts a day or two and some winters we may not even get any snows over 3", so it's not really worth the investment.

cycletourist- I bet you guys are getting hammered up there now, ours ended mid afternoon and now it's turned into a slushy mess. It is pretty though, a real wet heavy snow, good for snowball fights

To top it all off, our weather people didn't forecast this so I loaded the Jeep last night for a mondo bike trip in the hills. I hope spring gets here soon, I started a desk job last week and if I can't get out and stay active soon I'm gonna turn into a blob of goo by spring. Maybe I can try again to ride my EVIL trainer

    Dirtbikedude,

I wish out trails were like that now. Like others have done, I have turned to XC skiiing and snowshoeing to stay in shape. Here is a pic near the beginning of one of the local trails from two days ago. The trail follows the snowmobile tracks for a little while and then forks into the woods. It was hard riding once the snowmobile tracks dissappeared.

Snow riding is a blast! I can see how our neighbors up north have trouble riding in several feet, but bikes go just fine in a couple inches of snow. Here we have about 3 inches of snow, and the ground is frozen; it makes for perfect riding in a winter wonderland. The way I see it, why xc ski when I could be riding my bike in the snow? Bikes are faster and more fun. just my 2 cents

Hey Mike, pack up the kids and come on down, send the kids to DisneyWorld and I'll take you to some trails!

Current temp is 66 F, forecast high's in the mid 70's, and a mild front moving through the area with highs tomorrow only mid 60's.

I just raced a 12 hour race in Ocala, FL. Over 220 (4 person) teams and 70 solo riders. Tinker Juarez from Cannondale raced Solo, and Gary Fisher raced on a team! Pretty cool!
