Kind of odd to see the Gary fisher GED in there. THey are all xc bikes except the GEd which is more of a dj bike.
From a strictly bang for the buck point of veiw, the "Tassajara Disc" is pretty much on par with all the others component wise that are more expensive. I'd go that route for best value. But, having said that, whatever fits best is the best choice overall.

This is a strange grouping. The Montaire doesn't really fit with the Scale, Tass, or 6500. What kind of riding are you generally interested in? For a good value on an all around XC bike, I second the Tass. Have you test ridden any of these? If not, that's where I'd start.

The Trek, the Tass and the Scott are among the ones I'm really looking at. I was thinking the same thing. I'm leaning toward the Tass cause of the price. Mainly because the Trek and Tass have disc brakes. I'm not sure whether the Trek or Tass have the new control arm shifters. I know the Scott does... I like the Scott because it has the dual control arm shifters (integrated with the brake levers) and it also has disc brakes. I'm going to look at them today or tomorrow and see what other features it's got. But my main concern is the frame and the fork on the tess. Are they good..

If you price is not a problem, Scott is the best out of the 5. That's just my opinion. Cuz sooner or later you'll find Manitou Axel to be crap and changing the fork will cost at least $200 or so (new).

I would go with the Scott, or a Trek 6700 -- not the 6500. The Fisher is well spec'd aside from the Manitou fork, which will work alright but I wouldn't bank on it working a year or two later. It's going to be noticeably for flexible than the Tora; I also wouldn't bank on being able to get any sort of parts for it.
