best xc forks on a budget?

I ride a 05 rockhopper and it is a killer machine but the ropey Manitou forks really let it down. I ride 90% xc (mountainous woodland) with a bit of tarmac to get to and from the trees. I have a budget of around 250/$450 and am a heavy rider both in terms of weighing 15 stone and riding 5 times a week. For that money the choice seems to be the new Rock Shox Reba race but I would grateful for any suggestions or experience. Thanks in advance.

Wow! After reading your post, i thought you summed up my perdicament perfectly. I have been overhauling my 04 hardrock and was asking myself the same questions you are.I ride as often as possible, and while i may not be a hefty individual, i abuse my bike when i am on it. After asking folks at my LBS and local bike co-op, i decided that the rebas, advertised as an agressive xc fork, would be perfect for me. I have never riden them myself, but i have read many reviews and just ordered them myself last night. Before you even mentioned the Reba, i was thinking of suggesting them. I found it for under $400 with a poploc!!! So it also sounds right in your price range too. My advice, browse ebay daily and persistently. Keep looking for deals on the 06 models! Good luck with your forks and happy trails!

Rockshox is definately the best value out there now. Even the new Tora/Recon is a really nice fork.

I've seen '05 Marzocchi MX Pros on ebay for $200. If you can wait a few months, the '06s will be going cheap as well.
