What's The Deal With Those Toe Cleats

Forgive me if there is a thread on this somewhere that I missed.

I'd like some info on when and where using those add on traction cleats, that can be fitted to some shoes, is a good idea. Are they for traction in mud, ice, snow - for rock?

they work very well for climbing steep unrideable hills...

^^^^ Exactly. I also like shoes with big mo'fuggah heel cleats for coming down the unridable stuff.
