What would you buy with 1000.00?

Ok I am looking to get into the MTB scene. I want to buy a bike that I won't have to upgrade for a while. I would like full suspension and disc brakes. I am about 5'7" and don't really know what size bike to look for either.
WHat would you buy and where would you get it?
Thanks in advance!

Excellent read!!!
Thanks, I guess I should pay attention.
Ok, now I have a better idea of what I want. I am looking at the TREK 6700 disc and the RockHopper Pro Disc.
I was planning to buy online but now that I read the FAQ's, I will go to a bike shop that has both bikes, ride them both, get a feel and get properly fitted to it.
Anything to pay attention to or that I might be missing?

If I had a 1000 dollars, Id fill my car up with gas, 3 or 4 times, and then with the left over money, I'd take in a movie.

For $1,000 I would buy a nice wheelset and a couple sets of tires.

I'd get a Plain ol' Rockhopper and save the rest for upgrades (read: breakage). Unless you're racing, then I'd save until I could afford a Stumpjumper or equivalent. If you're not racing and those milliseconds don't really count, save the money. Your fun per dollar quotient will go up.

Assuming I already have a bike, I'd upgrade the suspension fork, drivetrain, and other things - either that or I'd buy some parts for my car - yes, I am also an Acura nut.

+1, I'd sell my plain old Rockhopper and move up to a hardtail Stumpjumper or TREK 8500. I'd probably have to buy a recent used on ebay or craigslist, but I think my next move is to a lightweight hardtail with better components.

I'd pay off the credit card I bought my bike on However if you're talking about just having $1k for a bike specifically, i'd get a $500 - $800 bike and use the rest for extras... (tires, water bottle and cage, camelbak, frame and/or floor pump, seat, grips, cleaning/lubing supplies, tools...) and if you have all that you could just buy a lot of gatorade and power bars to take on your rides
