kona kula or kona hoss deluxe ?
i am about to buy a new bike and was going to get a Kona hoss, but have found a bike shop that has the hoss deluxe and the Kula on special both cheaper than i can buy a standard hoss !! my problem is now i am unsure which one to buy. bike will be used to commute to work and weekend trailriding with my son and maybe some small jumping. anyone have any ideas as to which bike i should buy ? both the hoss deluxe and the kula are $400 off . $1249 AUD for the hoss deluxe and $1279AUD for the kula ,standard hoss is $1299.

If I'm not mistaken the Hoss is designed for larger riders, it's built stronger to support the weight, unless you are heavy I would go for the Kula.
EDIT: This is a quote from the Kona website for the Hoss "We began designing tough bikes for bigger riders last year and it just seemed to make a lot of sense. There are a lot of riders who agreed." |

I would think a Kula would beable to support that too. But I think the Hoss has different fork valving for the weight. Have you given them both a test ride yet? |
no havent rode or actually seen them yet ,have just been dealing over the phone. my LBS does not have much of a range so will have to travel to sydney (3 1/2 hr drive ) thats why i need all the advice i can get so that i can make sure the shop has what i want in stock before i drive 3 1/2 hrs .

I'm about 215 and 6' and have the Hoss deluxe. I was heavier when I bought it but still appreciate the extra strength built into the frame and components like the rims and stuff, gives me a little extra confidence that it wont break under me.

i think i will definitely get the Hoss deluxe. the kula looks great but after checking out the marzocchi site i dont think the fork is very good. The Kula fork is a ''Marzocchi gran fondo 1 ''Kona say the kula is a cross country bike but marzocchi claim the fork as a trekking fork and quote "trekking is similar to xc but not as agressive as xc.it involves slower riding and no riding obstacles such as rocks,roots,or depressions.you should only attach generators and racks to the designated mounting points provided on the forks.never make any modifications to your fork to attach any equipment " . It would seem that the fork would not be strong enough to handle anything other than smooth trails. Anyone have this fork and have an opinion good or bad ?

The Gran Fondo one came stock on my Kona Dawg Deluxe which is supposed to be considered sort of an AM bike. I'm sure they would choose a fork that would best suit the need? :o

Both you guys have quoted directly from the two sites. A while ago i was wondering the same thing about that fondo fork. Marzocchi says its for trekking which they describe as even less agressive than xc as Bikes'n'bundy wrote, but as Siu Blue wind said, the dawg line is for all mountain which i have always interpreted as more agressive than xc. I emailed kona tech about this and all they said was that they werent at liberty to make any claims about another company's product. i guess this doesnt really help anyone much, but im just saying you arent the only ones wondering about this. if you want MY real opinion i think the fork would be ok for most people buying the bike, but if you are riding the definition of all mountain all the time, i think the fork wouldnt suit you for long. I have noticed that most people buy bikes for a riding style that is a bit more agressive than their real style. since kona is a business intending to make money like any other business, they market appropriately; they say "look at this 5 inch all mountain bike, its not xc and not freeride." they know that most people dont need a 5 inche kind of bike so they cut costs by putting on lower end components but they still have the 'wow' factor of a 5inch bike. When I got my Coiler I noticed that the bike could keep going bigger but the components couldnt take it. After upgrading quite a few things the bike is sweet and the frame with the 6 inch travel can still do more. I hope i didnt offend anyone by stereotyping people on what bikes they own or how they ride. Just thought my experiences my be useful.

Oh yes, and it makes a lot of sense. Gives you room to upgrade. What the manufacturer of the fork REALLY wants. ;)
