also notice the hardrock has a slightly beefer frame than other bikes, so it will be a little better suited to occaisional jumps/drops etc... i don't know if that makes it heavier than other bikes, but it is definitely beefier, i wanted one but the only specialized shop in my area are a$$es, the best shops i know of in my area sell trek haro gf and giant which are ok bikes too.

Yes, it's a good bike for trail riding. I've got an '05 Hardrock Sport and have ridden a variety of trails with it. It is heavy, but with enough oomph I can make it up many hills. I've only broken the seatpost on mine so far. I did replace the stock seat and pedals though.

i ride an 04 hardrock. it's a pretty decent ride. very versatile ride if left stock. i upgraded mine to make it a bit more trailworthy. the frame is a quallity beefy specialized frame well suited for abuse. my bike is more of a all mountain hard tail if you have to call it something. i just call it ugly. it's a solid entry level bike but i wish i had something nicer now that i have invested more time in the sport. so it goes. i was super pumped when i bought it. i thought it was top of the line. i'd say go for it if your on the fence.

I rode a Hardrock during my quest for a new bike. The frame is good, but as mentioned a bit on the heavy side. I've been riding a friends Merlin Titanium, so it felt like a truck - which I didn't like that much. But I reckon it's up to your liking/style.
You also might want to look into a Rockhopper. In the new 2007 series, there will be a model with the current Stumpjumper frame - which is much lighter. It'll be around 1600 AU$, which is way below the actual Stumpjumper price range.

Great bike, been used for freeride and downhill for a year and a half now. Broken some small things (pedals, crankset) but the frame is still going strong.

Hardrock
I have a hardrock and love it! however I want to upgrade the forks, but dont have a lot of $$ to spend. Any suggestions anyone?
I use it for commuting on roads in the week and then some pretty tough XC trails at the weekend. I find the RST's it came with way too hard and I cant seem to adjust them....

I have an 05 Hardrock PRO - I love that bike - I don't ride it as often as I used to because I have converted to more road riding than dirt
I actually have a set of slicks though that I swap on her for some road riding
