What would be the best upgrades to turn this bike into a cross country/ cyclocross machine?
I've already added clipless peddles.

First thing I'd do would be get some narrower tires and lighter tubes.
After that, new lighter wheels.
Then,.....whatever breaks.

Well, I'd like to say you've gone and picked the wrong bike for what you want to do. I've seen people make them into Dirt jumpers, but never cyclocross. There's a guy that rides in this city who put a DJ 1 on his, works nice too.
