what type of crankset should i buy?
hello,
i am in need of a new crankset. i have a specialized hardrock with a new fork and it is time for the crankset. i do mostly dirt jumps and some xc, but i would like to get into downhill and some moderate freeride. i also want a crankset that will last for a long time. if it makes any difference, the fork that i have is a rock shox recon, with a broken (hopefully reparable) compression lock.

Shimano Saints would be great. They are one of the strongest freeride/downhill cranks, but the are also very light weight.
If the Saints are alittle too much $$$, then look at the Truvativ Hussefelts.

I just bought a set of Shimano Saint cranks and they are awesome! Double ring with a bash guard! They are on closeout and you can get them for about $175.00.
Cambria Bike had them.
I bought them from my LBS and they gave me a deal. $200 out the door!
Other than those, I'd recommend a set of chromoly cranks like www.profileracing.com or the ones that Azonic makes www.azonicusa.com

I'd recommend getting Bontrager Big Earl cranks over getting Truvativ Hussefelts(I find truvativ to be overpriced). The hussefelts retail at 149.99 USD, whereas the Big earl cranks are from 89.99 - 109.99 USD depending on the model. I've got both, and I'd take the big earls any day.

The best cheapest ones are Truvativ Husselfelt. $150 American. Great Cranks!

Even on a $3000 bike, the components usually are worth much more than the frame, and especially on bikes like the Hardrock, they put very low-end components on a decent frame to price competitively...
