Descending is were it really shines though. Barging through rock gardens there is less deflection, it's really "point and shoot."

So uh, John....Can I come over and try it?? Puleeeze???

I"ve ran dampers on my ATV's for years and they are worth their wieght in gold. Anything off road with 2 or 4 wheels can benefit from one.

What defines the ideal terrain or bike type that benefits from a damper?
Does the damper hamper a bike or the rider under other conditions?

I would think that this only helps when moving pretty quick.. like downhill.

You can move pretty quickly going down a fireroad. Is this more for bumpy-bump quick or any hard lateral forces?

It helps when climbing very steep (either loose or techy terrain) when your chest it pushed down to the bars and your in the red ringer position. The front end (which is light due to the slope) tends to wander much less and it's easier to hold a line.

It helps at all speeds when barging through rock gardens, across roots, etc. The front end deflects less and it's point and shoot.

Hmmm, I'd be temped to try one of those then. I have trouble climbing when it gets very steep and slippery/techncial. No problems climbing when I can get decent traction and do the boobs-to-the-bar balance to make sure I keep sending the weight to either the front or back wheel. With this thing it seems like maybe I'll have to spend less time unloading the rear onto the front. At least I hope that it does that. Worth trying a before and after I think.

Would have been a handy thing for Sun Peaks' Masters Worlds DH course I think. My front end was skating and wandering in the 6+"-deep silt - unnerving at warp sped.
