Dealing with the aftermath
Hi everyone,
My MTB has been broken into and they have stolen me fork, stem, handle bar and me disc break calipers . The rest are chained up safely and without any further damages. I now need to pick up the peices and rebuild me bike.
So the questions are:
1. I need a fork with front shock and will accomodate disc brake under 100GBP. All I need is entry level XC type of suspension. Any brand and model?
2. I can see some ball bearings on the top opening of the head tube, so do I need a new headset?
3. I need some disc calipers any models and makes?
Thanks for your replies,
Paul

jiiiim: Yes I chain my bike just outside of my office to some bike parking racks. I though the business park is pretty safe with 24hrs security and CCTV. But my colleague told me after the incident that the security is not responsible for the part of the park my company is at and the CCTV was fakes. Well I can only say learn from the mistake not to chain my bike there over nite.
I was thinking of getting a 2nd hand Giant OCR for a change and a 2nd bike before but now I can't coz my MTB needs the funds to get itself repaired.
Alrocket: Thanks for the links but I am not sure why the Suntours forks are so cheap as if it is free when compaired to say RockShox. I though the Suntours are pretty good. Also I got used to the Hydralic Disc brakes which ones are there on the website is Hydralic? I think I have to look at the headset later as there are so many choice.

At least you know you have a good lock, if they spent all that time stripping it.
I've seen bikes stripped of stuff that was worth nothing, like mis-matched 1990s canti arms with elastic bands instead of return springs, and bent steel handlebars, so no suprise really.

I hope the local PD actually took some notes about how stuff was yanked, preferably grabbing fingerprints.
If the bike is in the same place, can you take photos, even with a crappy cellphone camera of the incident? I doubt insurance will cover it, but it is definitely worth keeping pictures for your records.
Here in Austin especially around the main university here, that stuff is sadly common, there are some bike racks that look like elephant graveyards with frames in various states of decay (one or both wheels missing, no fork, etc.) Lots of people chain their front wheel and frame to something... then some twerp snarfs the rear wheel.
Sometimes I wonder if its less of a theft thing, than an anti-bike vandalism issue. For example, people who just hate bicyclists who steal seats just because they are easy to pop the QR, lift off, and stuff in a backpack or a dumpster.

erhan: The amazing thing is that they actually took the fussy to leave me the gear shifters but the brake levers are gone.
mlts22: The local PD here just got bored with it. They won't do anything if they heard yet another bike has been trashed, stolen or anything related to bicycles. what they will do is issue you a crime number and get you off their system as fast as they can. Btw Cambridge, UK has the 2nd highest Bicycle Theft record in the country.
jiiim: I would dust for fingerprints if I have access to the equitments like the lab in any CSI shows ;-)

The comment about taking pictures and filing a police report should be followed. At a minimum, you will be able to file the loss on your income tax. I know that's not much consolation, but it's some minor relief. I hope you can find whoever did this.
How about posting as much information as possible so we can help you watch ebay. I'd love to help you nail those SOBs.

jiiiim: Thanks for your concern. I don't know how they did it but I guess they have to remove the grips to get access to everything. Well I was shocked and angery when I saw my bike got smashed up like that, but when I inspect the rest of the bike, they are all intact without any further damages. So it is a mix feeling really, kinda angery, shocked, happy and sad at the same time. I don't mind if they do it just out of desperation to survive but if they did it just because of a joke or making people's life misarable then I whish they got caught someday and put behind bars for what they have done to the masses.
roccobike: Humm..... I have already removed the bike from the crime scene I don't know if there still any point in taking the photos.
Well to everyone, my bike is a Shogun Paranoid XC 2005 model, the fork is Mozo Groove-M suspension, Ahead Stem, Tioga handlebars and the make and model of the hyduralic brake is unknown. I know the bike is not as good as most of the users here have but I truly love my bike coz it gives me so much fun and I have riden my first 50 miles ride with it and I am planning to do more with it. Thanks for looking out for the missing parts and I will do the same to see if I can catch the theives.

If someone did THAT to my bike, I will want him to suffer when hes living and will burn in the deepest pit of hell after he died. Of coarse that will all change if I caught him, ill make sure i hit him up badly with my neighbourhood pals and then bring him to the police. Thats what some of the kind citizens at our area did to snatch thief. Give them a hell of injury then send em to the police ^^. I still have not forgiven the theif who stoled my sis Nike Shoes which was given as her birthday present. My sis cursed him, and let god to handle him. Haha

Update: I think my disc brake system is a AMR520. Does that ring any bells?

Ok finally I must say I need to face the truth!!!!!
Just phoned up the LBS and they gave a quoate of 330GBP for the parts and labour and it is more then the bike originally. Maybe I should move on and get myself a new bike.
