Shimano XTR GS vs. SGS?

I've read the descriptions but still don't really get it.
The mid cage is good for what, other than lighter weight? Better shifting? Many moons ago I had a short cage XT derailleur and the shifting was great but I could not go big-big because the chain would be too short. However, that was fine since crossing over that much is a little too much.
