Hi guys....


After listening to all my complains about the Axel fork that i have...i will probably get the stiffer spring as advised ,as a short run solution to my problems (see Crash due to forks? post).
I have visited Marzocchi site today and i read some reviews on www.mtbr.com. I really have fallen in love with the Z1 DropOff fork, and the MXComp/Pro forks with ETA. the first is 5lbs and the latter 4.2lbs. I was considering Manitou Black Comp as my next fork but now that i have run into marzocchies i am into a dilemma.
Will the Z1 ruin the geometry of my bike? (Rockhopper HT 2003). What do you think about the comparison between Z1DropOff/MXpro/Mxcomp/ManitouBlackcomp? I am doing aggresive XC and fireroad downhills. The only thing that keeps me close to manitou is my disc brakes. I got an XT disc 170mm with an adaptor for manitou that have costed me an additional 100$ for the conversion ...... if i go back to 160mm disc for the std ISIS mounts of a marzocchi will i lose brake power? (i am really addicted to my current brake power) Since i am going to lose the cash spent on adaptor and rotor if i convert to marzocchi ,i dont want to loose brake power as well....

I think you should keep the fork you have, since its not whats causing you to crash.

well i could use more control.... thats why i am considering a more sturdy fork as a long run solution... I dont feel confident on my current fork....maybe with a stiffer spring i will....

1 - it is not the dark side just because it is better
2 - z1 dropoff (I didn't even know they were still making them in 2003) is a light freeride fork while the MX is a sturdy xc fork. The lighter weight and the eta makes the MX my prefered choice. I don't like manipoo
3 - The mount doesn't make the braking stronger it is the size. The size will be strong on anything.

i know that the mount wont matter...its just that with manitou i got 170mm rotor and with zokkies i ll get 160mm rotor....is the brake power difference noticeable?

Leave the guy alone, if he wants a new fork, give him suggestions on what to get. You dont always have to second guess his judgement.

ok, ok. bad use of word, but if the guys got the money, and he wants or feels he needs a new fork, then let him get it, i dont see the problem, if you dont think he should get it then dont give him advice.

A 5" travel fork is gonna mess up your XC oriented ride too much. Rule out the Z1, the MX Comp is a great fork and you won't be dissapointed. The Manitou Black is comparable to the MX Comp, it's similar but different. Personally, I like the Black, and I ended up getting one for a friend. He had a $300 budget, and I ended up getting a Black Comp and a Chris King headset for under $300 for him.

If you're not a big rider, and I recall you're not, and not into drops, which you've stated you're not, then either fork will be great!

No, if I were you, I'd just get some stiffer springs!

BTW, I'm confused as to why you think you need to go to a smaller rotor. You'll just need to get a new adapter, to fit you 170mm rotors. That's all!

They make adapter to extend the calipers out even further! If you go to the forks website, you should be able to get the info you need on what adapter you'll have to buy!

thanks for the support everyone! A2 i ll go with the advice. thanks! Springs first ...black or mxcomp then. The XT discs go with 160mm rotors on all forks except on manitou ones where the go only with 170mm.
By the way....i am not the man with the money..... just a postgrad student that wants the best out of his ride.

I have just stripper down my fork and changed the travel settings from 80mm to 100mm (the distance from seal to crown is now 120mm) and it has somehow become a bit stiffer....it has less sag when i sit on the bike.... i am looking forward to riding the thing!!!

Congrats on the new springs. The feeling is cool when it is finally tuned properly. AND Wait till you get a different fork. Better forks feel incredibly different and usually much better. thats what I meant

aaah ok ...i didnt get the new springs yet....i just stripped the fork...cleaned it and changed the travel from 80mm to 100mm by removing a washer from the inner leg.
