Hayes Hydraulic Disc gone bad.
 

I think I did something stupid.. While cleaning my bike I squeezed the brake handle. They are “Hayes Hydraulic Disc”. When I went to put the wheel back on, the pads were squeezed together to tight. Now I can’t figure out how to loosen them.

Has anyone ever had this problem before?
What do I need to do?

Below is a pic of the brake pads where the disc slides in between. You can see how much wider the slot just below the pads is.

Help, help, help......

Stick a flat-head screw driver in between the pucks and gently pry them apart by twisting the screwdriver. Continue prying gently back and forth after the pucks have reached a width that exceeds the width of the screwdriver. You can use a shop towel to cover the screwdriver head to prevent nicking the pucks.

Thx, I was concerned that I might have to bleed the brakes or something like that... which I don't yet have the knowledge of how to do that either. I'm sure when the time comes I'll be asking questions here again.

Now I can't seem to be able to put the chain back on.... I took it all apart to clean everything and now the chain is oddly loose.

Make sure your chain is going through the idlers correctly. There are some metal crossover pieces in the idler assy that the chain has to go through also. Make sure it's not resting on top of them. If you are in your small-small rings the chain will seem loose though.

I think I might have it set up wrong or something... any help?
Do i just need to put the chain on top of that bottom gear? I'm going to continue to mess with it. I think that degreaser is getting to me.:crash:

It's the degreaser.

Ok. The moral of this thread is; don’t clean your chain with degreaser in a stove up room. My head started to hurt and I though I was going to throw a few chunks.. When I finally figure out what I was doing wrong I just laughed... maybe we could delete this thread or something... Or just leave it up. Someone else might go through this same adventure but not want to let everyone know about it.

I wasnt trying to be rude about your chain setup there, just thought it was funny:) I think it might be a little easier for you if you put the wheel on and then route the chain. Maybe this pic will help you. You need to rotate that one sprocket down. In this pic the blue is your chain routing, red is the sprockets. Hopefully this will make sense, I made it REALLY quickly....

No you guys weren't to late. I just thought I had it right. It took me until now to figure it out. Started at 10:45......it is now 12:53. Zzzzzzzz..... I'll never do that again.

Now that I have the chain on the brakes are still real snug.. I'm going to have to mess with them a little more. :rolleyes:

There is so much resistance with the pads pressing up against the discs now that wouldn't even want to ride the bike. I'll press on tomorrow, for now I'm going to bed. I hope I didn't break anything.
