However much I like the video, that is seriously an easy way to get yourself hurt. You really don't know who the person you're trying to confront is and how pissed that might be. I wouldn't suggest that as a good idea unless you are ready to defend yourself (and in texas that might be use of deadly force). Even if its your property, if something happens, you could still end up in a world of trouble.
Glad everything went alright in the circumstance though and glad the owner got his bike back without more than an argument.
If they were going to call the police and put in under investigation, they should have called them to meet them at the place the bike was to begin with so that there is no chance of incident.

Police and stuff would take a while wouldnt it?
I would have just taken the bike like Cam did, but I doubt I would have been as friendly.

What ever happened to that kid who was doing a "social experiment" by putting his bike out on the front yard for a week or some such time? Has anyone heard a response? Did I miss it somehow?

I live in Quebec and if the theft is under 5000$ the cops tell you to collect on the insurance and that's that.
I had a guy rid off my bike and I hired a PI to hunt him down and make his life miserable. He was glad to pay me the 2500$ for the bike to get the PI off his ass.

Blame it on the hubris of youth, but I say people should grow a pair and take back from thieves. If people live in an environment where stolen merchandise is neither desireable for self use or profitable in trade then theft becomes less of an issue. How better to accomplish that then making stolen merchandise a liability for the thief in every day life, not just encounters with the law.
To date I've taken back a (my) stolen mountainbike I saw for sale at a fleamarket, and last year I chased a rollerblader with a stolen roadbike wheel halfway through midtown until he gave up tossed the wheel into the street.
Someone on the SSFG forum was walking along with his GF when he saw a bike thief trying to smash a lock to steal some bikes. He made a big deal from across the street about how he was calling the cops and the thief took off.

great vid! Ive witnessed (via forum) a handful of recovery's take place on sffixed.com
there is a very tight communtiy of fixed gear riders in SF and when a stolen bike is spotted they have gone as far as to sign up for a group paging service to call out the posse for help recovering the bike!
again awesome!
