I had back surgery last summer to correct a ruptured disc in my lower back. I have 0 zilch pain. Prior to that, riding my steel GT Avalanche was still murder on my back. I basically stood up entire rides. I don't think you should expect a steel frame to alleviate your pain.
On the other hand, a full suspension will IMO do a lot better job of absorbing rear end shocks. While I like steel (2 road bikes) and appreciate that Nashbar put out that sweet 853 frame, going to full suspension was the best decision I ever made. The GT is getting sold off after the realization that there's no reason to keep it around. There is no going back.
For $80 more ($369), you could get a Sette Riddik from Pricepoint. If you factor in the price of the rear shock, the frame is FREE. Gets good reviews on MTBR. For $549, they just got in a new frame, the Ace. Looks nice too.
Unfortunately, it looks like you're running v-brakes and these are disc specific. Again, after moving to disc brakes, and specifically hydraulic, I'll never run rim brakes again on a MTB. Good time to do some upgrading!
You could certainly go out and ride any decent full suspension bike from a bike shop to see if it helps with the back. Try riding off curbs and such to mimic trail riding. Some shops might even have a steel mtb for comparison. Jamis and I think Rocky Mountain still make them.
No sense buying yet another frame/bike that you can't ride...

I finished the build a couple of weeks ago and took it up to Anacortes for a spin. The bike feels great on the trails - nimble, stable and a climber. I was surprised how comfortable I felt while riding it. I had assumed that it would feel a bit foreign after all the years on my Cadex.

the weights are listed under more info -
_SIZE_ _15.5"_ _17.5"_ _19.5"_ _21.5"_
Weight: 4.66 lbs 4.70 lbs 4.87 lbs 5.15 lbs
It's probably not light compared to many of the ALU or composite xc frames. However, it should be in the same ballpark as the jamis dragon, salsa ala carte, rocky mountain blizzard or any of the other 853 frames that are likely coming from maxway.
It's definitely got a beefy rear triangle.
