Hello,

First post here. I'm fixing up my mother's 2002 Santa Cruz Superlight to sell on ebay because she never uses it. I've been having a good time cleaning it up and testing it before I sell it.

I'm a MB novice, so this is more of a basic "is this how its supposed to work question."

It has a Fox brand Float racing shock in the rear suspension. When I ride it, it is pretty much always in its fully compressed state. I thought this might be how it is supposed to work, but I'm noticing my pedals are dangerously close to the ground. The shock still damps a bit (seems like not enough) and its compression/expansion rate responds to adjustments on the little dial, but it just seems like it isn't working right. Shouldn't it remain in a pretty uncompressed state during normal pedaling and coasting and what not?

The shock is under sprung. thbis means that you are using too much of the suspension as sag than what it was designed for. As you have a Fox Float you should be able to pump more air into the shock to make it a heavier 'spring'. I don't know figures but just add small amounts of air to it until you get the right sag level. All dual suspensionbikes are designed to have a little bit of sag. In general you should have about 25-40% sag (depends on bike and what it is used for) You should try to set yours up with 30% sag.

The easiest way to do this is put a ziptie around the shock slider, push it towards the shock body and sit on the bike. What you should aim for is the ziptie to be moved up 30% of the shaft when you just sit on the bike and do a little bit of smooth pedalling on smooth road.

Chances are if it's been sitting for a while the rear shock has lost pressure.As Hopper said you need a shock pump to put air in the rear shock.

If pumping the shock up doesn't work, there may be some grit inside the shock & it might need an overhaul - my son had that problem with a fox float he had a few years back. Even a little bit of grit (which may have gotten in there in really wet/muddy conditions) can mess up the seal holding the air inside, causing the shock to slowly lose pressure.
