Hi I'm a 17 yr old girl and about to buy my very first mountain bike! I reasearched online, and went to my LBS more than once to try bikes and grill the friendly sales people(I'm making them run hard for my money). I'm considering the Specialized Hardrock. Here's the problem, the bike shop only has the men's. It was 15," fit perfect (I'm only a litttle over 5'4")and I loved the ride so I'm sure it would work well for me, but I think it's possible I could have them order the women's bike so I can try it. But is it necessary? How much different is the women's from the men's? I know the women's has a shorter stem(what's that supposed to do?), narrower handlebars, and probably a slightly different saddle but are these features significant enough that I should try the women's when the men's fit so well?
p.s. great forum, over the past few weeks whenever I had a question all I had to do was search and it had already been answered! What a great bunch of people that help us newbies, thanks
Transition Dirtbag, Kona Roast 2002 and specialized BMX
If the mens fit don't worry about. I forget the geometry difference between mens and womens (I think it has something to with torso length vs leg length but forget which way women go in comparrison to men). If the mens fit grab it up. My gf rides a Kona Stuff which is a mens bike and it fits fine...This is a case where not all women are shaped the same and some fit mens stuff
The saddle will HELP a tonne. The specialized women pro I think is incredible. My gf loves it and is one of the main upgrades she has done.
