Is This Anything Special?

I usually hang around in the Classic and Vintage forum but I have a question for the mtb crowd today. THIS is on the Nashville CL and I was wondering what, if anything you all could tell me about this bike and the brand. Is it worth the $40 and worth fixing up?

Depends on the componenets...I wouldn't spend too much time or money on it. At $40, you get a basic bike...looks like those inexpensive MTB's of the 80's where companies caught by surprise by the new bike's popularity offered products cobbeled together from parts in their baskets...you saw road bike drive trains, forks with wide shoulders for the wide tires, crappy brakes, etc

These bikes do nothing well...climb like pigs, are hard pedlers, and always want to throw you over the bars on the descents

just a long way of saying that you buy the bike for $40...put some money into it...and end up with a bike worth $40

Don't know too much about vintage bikes but I have cleaned about 50+ pre-World War II Schwinns at work (lucky me).

So from the little knowledge I have this bike looks like nothing special.

That bike was barely $40 new and is not in any way collectible. It should go to the scrap yard so they can make something usefull out of the steel.

Glad I asked. It didn't really look like anything special to me either, but I thought I should ask. The thing that grabbed my attention was the Columbia Badge. That company started making bikes in 1877 although I doubt that they still do.

hmmm...Huffy started in 1887 and Schwinn in 1895...just look at them now

Seriously, that Columbia looks like the crappy MTB's that Raleigh, CCM, and others were making in 1985...Looking at the pix, I think that I see see side-pull brakes...these things were used on kid's bikes and cheap bikes in the 70's and 80's, didn't work in the rain, and the bikes usually had steel wheels that turned slick when wet

good luck with this

I took one of these from a neighbor's trash. I'm figuring a way to get it back to him.
