1st New bike in 14 years

I have been riding my bike for about 14 year (had it since I was a teen). Im looking for some direction. I had a mountain bike before, and believe thats what im looking for now. Im 6'4", 220lbs, I plan on most of the riding to be on pavement/easy trails. I would like a longer bike due to my height. only about 15% of the riding would be considered "real mountain biking", but would like to be able to do it without worry. Im looking at a budget of about $600 but would go a little more for something much better. Im open for any advice.

this is a great time to be buying a bike. you can get '06's for about 25-35% off at your LBS. i'm a little smaller than you, and i like the way Jamis bikes are set up. i also like Bianchi set-ups, but they are so freakin pricey
