Shimano Pedal Opinions Please

I need a pair of SPD pedals and I'm looking at the PD M 540 and PD M 520. They look about the same and the difference in weight is 28 grams (.988 oz) for the pair. The 540's are listed as "racing" pedals while the 520's are "sport" pedals. They look about the same. What's the difference other than about $40-$50? Any opinions?

On my hybrid I have 424's (with a resin platform) and they seem to work fine. The 520's, 540's or perhaps 424's will be for a new road bike. No racing...club and recreational rides only.

I'm focusing on Shimano although I know that there are other fine pedals out there.

Thank you. Your thoughts are much appreciated

Just buy the 540s for the price of the 520s.
