I Have No Ideal What I Am Doing.

i had this piece of ****! Schwinn bike from K-mart (230$).... last night... THE BACK WHEEL HIT ME IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD WHILE I WAS MOVING?! didn't hurt me...

the bike is gone... its all over the road! if this was a motorcycle i would be DEAD!

so now i am looking for new Mountain Bike.... and thats all i know......

i will pay 300$ 400$ for bike.... i would like front shocks.. and disk brakes.... and black.. if possible.

and would it be cheaper to build my own? what the heck am i looking for?

Stay away from K-Mart, Shop-Ko, Walmart, etc. bicycles.
Looks like you just learned that one.

I think in your price range a lower end KHS or something similar can be had from REI or the Sports Authority. Quite a few decent brands have lower end bikes in the $400 range.
If you have a friend that knows what to look for and will go with you, maybe try the pawn shops and classifieds to see what can be had that way.

You can almost pick your brand as long as it's not a real custom or high end brand such as Foes or Intense.

Most popular brands such as Giant, KHS, Diamond Back, and the like have at least something in your range.
Go to a few bike shops (NOT K-MART) and see what's out there. Gaining some knowledge that way will really help.
Ask them about anything they may have used in decent condition.

I second that, no joke. GET YOUR MONEY BACK! A friend of mine was jumping with his Wal mart bike and trashed it and they did take it back.

maybe you should have tightened the wheel before riding the thing.. your 300 to 400 dollar bike will do the same thing if you don't maintain it.

Awesome looking bike, it should serve you well and if you can get it on a spring sale then even better. Good luck and bike hard!

Moral of the story children: Don't ride a Wal Mart (or Target if that is your preference) bike without having it first checked over at the bike shop. Oh, and they might laugh at you, so you should return it and buy a bike from there!
