when I asked Joe to make that SS/fixie forum I never expected the messenger/track/fixie niche to catch on so. At the time is was riderx, me, and some other mtb guys who were doing the ss thing. So mtb ss is a little out of place, but it doesn't need a sticky.

Currently 32 x 18 (1.86x1 or something near that), very soon I intend to go to 34 in the front, maybe 17 in the rear.

My budget dinglespeed, based on the Nashbar $45 frame.
All told, I put about $275 into it, out of pocket.

2 chainrings and 2 cogs, coupled with the Surly Singleator, gives me a townie gear and a trail gear: 42x16 and 36x18

PS- tensioner is now in push up mode, and a link or two has been shed from the chain, since this phot was taken.

Thin Blue Line Ozone Pro XT wacky proprietary ring setup 44x18/16..Thanks to Keith@ Cavern Cycles for finding a new one in the basement and saving me loads.
Dual sprocket on the cassette
Only in Canada you say?......Pity

My Mavics....rock rims in the house.
Syd the head protector.

Bought it used for 600cdn with the second set of rims.
Rode it 6 years...into the ground til the shifters wouldn't engage in the winter (contraction)...priced new shifters...OMG.
Hey let's make a SS, yea...next up...making the front end stiffy with a disk possibly then 24hrs races in the summer.

Man, everybody runs higher ratios than me. I tried 1:1 for a couple of rides, but it just wasn't working. I would stall out on climbs, and I thought my kneecaps were going to pop off my legs. I switched to 32x20, and I'm back to staying with/ahead of the gearies. I run a 42x16 for winter commuting, and I can climb the hills to my house with aplomb and some body english.

I am kinda surprised by some of the ratios myself. My 2:1 kills on some of the hills, I couldn't imagine running higher than that.

Most of the 2:1's are dj and street oriented bikes. ...

I run a 34x18 on my 29'' wheeled bike on the local trails. When I head to the mountains I run 34X21 on it.

2:1 is what all the SS riders in this area run, unless they are on a 29er in which case they gear down a couple teeth.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I can't imagine doing some of the usual xc loops with 2:1, since we usually do the climbs in 32x32 or lower.

I meant to say "in this thread"...

I can't speak in generics...in generics (from my experience) no one in this town runs ss except the bmxers

Now chainless....I see that fairly often if they are a mountain ***** only.

I'll be mounting a 32 on the inner side of mine for the 24hrs. 44x18&16 are streets....though even with knobbies I'm spinning out as I get back into my messer form from 20 years ago. Slicks will require I goto the 44x16 and I MIGHT have to go smaller. It's all about the speed on the road for me. So it should be a whole different bike in the summer. Rigid front end, disk brake possibly. Now If score that road frame I was hoping for ... new fixie/ss road ripper will be getting the love in the summer.
