New to MTB, no idea where to start

Ive ridden bmx and did a ton of dirt jumping in the past. After many injuries and lack of places to ride i've decided to go over to mountain biking. Ive ridden my friends Giant (i think it is Rock**** somethin or other) Full suspension, as well as my brothers mongoose ( broke the wheel dropping into a stream).

im 6'1 175 pounds, i guess im looking for a more aggressive offroad bike, i like to drop off of ledges and rocks, usually nothing more than 5-7 feet, but i mostly just ride trails. I dont really want it to be only for that stuff but just able to withstand it.

btw i am a poor college student.

what you want i think is a dj/street hardtail on a budget.

look at the specialized p. series, cannondale chase series, trek jack series, and norco shore hardtail or supercross series. very decent bikes to be had for cheap.

and unless i'm missing something, i believe the phrase is "when in rome"

Specialized Hardrock.

Haro Escapes and the Gary Fisher Bitter/GED's are pretty solid bikes as trailbikes/freeride bikes and decently cheap.

I am headed to some bike shops in my area and test ridin.

just by looks, the cannondale chase look a little to DJ-ish for what i want.

3 that i will be lookin for
-Gary Fisher Opie or Mullet
-Specialized Rockhopper
-Haro Escape 8.1

i would like disc brakes on it, hopefully i can find a shop with some of last years models and get a deal.

The Fisher Bign's would be a good bike line to look at.

yea, the shop's reveiws said that it is a good bike for X-bmx'ers to get on. i will probably go with the Mullet, it seems like it will be worth the extra cash.

i today i rode an 07 hardrock disk($500) and an 07 rockhopper disk($660)

i besides the shocks is there any major differences?
im a noob and it really seemed that they were pretty evenly matched as far as weight and feel.

looked more at the specs and the only differences is the fork and the Rear Derailleur, looking at the Piranha, rockhopper, it seems that all of them the shocks and the RD is the money spot, and just entering the sport i dont think that i will know the difference. I do have a specialized now and it is real nice.

but, i will be checking out some treks and G.F.s at another bike shop tomarrow
