Choosing Mid-range 2007

Hi--I'm new and desperately seeking advice here!

Just got the birthday funds up for a new bike. Rode the heck out of my '99 Rock Hopper until '01 when it was stolen. Trying to get back into shape and all that. Looking again at base-level bikes ranging from the $520-$850. I realize that component-wise they are all pretty much the same at this level, but I was just wanting some personal experience thoughts and opinions other than those from the guys tryin' to get the $$ from me. I know there are a few of you out there who can feel my pain...

I'm looking at the Felt Q720, Specialized Rock Hopper or better or maybe Cannondale? What are your thoughts?

I'm primarily on-road and want the ability and option to hit the trails and more, hopefully... I was attracted to the lock-out option on the Felt and hydraulic disc brakes. Will I have problems down the road with leaky brakes? If I'm not into repairing my own bike (YET!), is this something to consider?

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Samanthaw

Why not?

I like to do a lot of research before spending my own money. When I got the RH in '99, I was at a tent sale and it was a gift. I didn't really "try" any other bikes, nor had I done any research at all. Now that there seems to be more of a choice, I want to be sure. I did a test ride on the '07 RH and was moderately impressed, (eh, but what can you tell in a parkinglot wearing hiking boots and jeans?). Plus, now I can spend about $200 more and wonder if it's worth it.

Thanks for your reply!
