First time going to a trail...

Not really asking for much advice unless you guys have some. Just letting you know you might have a new noob to pick on in the coming months if I get hooked. Did road biking for about a year but am getting a little bored of it.

Gonna go to Amelia Earheart Park on a Mongoose wal-mart bike. Sounds like fun eh?

Have fun and pay attention to what the bike tells you right before catastrophic failure.

yea the bike is scaring me more than anything, but it's the only one i can come across. My friend who has been trying to get me to ride with him just finished building his Orbea, it's lighter than my roadbike. So he wants to break it in and i'm coming along for the ride.

Don't forget to snap off all the reflectors before you ride.

cocoasprinkles, you're a n00bie with honest and reasonable questions about mountainbike riding. Have no fear, someone on BikeForums will come along to viciously attack you for no reason!

What "honest and reasonable questions" are you referring to?

gastro, the last line of the original post contains his question about the "riding experience" at Amelia Earhart Park while on a not-so-good rig. That will be kind of funny, actually.

cocoasprinkles, the two kinds of riding go well together. The road miles give you that long-term endurance...the ability to push a big gear further and further. The mountainbike gives you enhanced levels of explosiveness, balance, and agility. You'll see as you toggle between the two the improvements in each. Hitting the trails definitely gives you and your friends something to laugh about when you return to the parking lot.

It's the ride that counts. Glad to see you had fun.

cocoasprinkles, that is excellent news. It's still pretty early in the main riding season, so your fitness will continue to climb as you keep at it. Have fun tomorrow.

Cocoa:

Sounds like you are on your way to enjoying mountain biking ! Don't let any of the elitest set shame you for riding the Mongoose, no matter where it came from. Most people were riding about the same or lower bike technology 15 years ago and it had "Acceptable" Brand names on it. Check it over regularly to be sure that nothing is loose or cracked and remember that bike is not made for 2 foot dropouts. Once you get the hang of things you will be passing slackers on expensive iron all day long.

Go have a blast, find out what type of riding you enjoy most, then you can invest in a ride that will really rock.

jT :-)

You are incorrect. It is not the ride nor the fun. What counts is having a red, fast bike. That is what counts.

What is the benefit to a red, fast bike?
