Lever for disk / V brakes.

I'm looking into buying a used bike with disc brakes. When I took a look at the bike the levers on the bike said "Shimano V-Brake". Does that mean that the bike has V instead of Disc breaks ? or do they just use the same shimano parts for the levers ?

could be that the bike has mechanical disc brakes, which are cable-actuated and use the same levers as v-brakes. if you took a look at the bike, wouldn't you have seen if the brakes were disc or not?
