Sunline v1 AM vs. Thomson X4

I'm going to get a shorter stem...I was wanting a Thomson X4 to match my post for the longest time until I saw the Sunline V1 All Mountain post. Whatchya think?

The price is not a real concern...the Sunline is $66 and the Thomson is $80.
They weigh about the same...Thomson is about 20g or so heavier.

I've been dreaming of a Thomson X4 for a while now, but there is no way I would spend $80 to replace my Sycross Bearhug DH.

If you need a longer stem like the Thomson posted, I would get the Sunline. but if you need a nice short stem I would get the Thomson.

There is a huge difference in terms of looks between the different lengths.

I'll either get the 80mm Sunline or 90mm Thomson.

If you want to get one to match your Thomson post... why not get the Thomson stem...? Or, which one is going to be the better length for your fit? 10mm can make a difference.

I've only got a 50mm of the X-4, and am digging it. Granted, the shorter lengths are quite a bit different than the longer versions.

I bet the weight will be closer, if not the Thomson lighter for roughly the same sizes. Methinks that Sunline weight of 148gms is for the 50mm version. While the listed 166gms is for the 100mm Thomson.

I don't necessarily want to match my Thomson post exactly...right now I have an EAfiddy. I just thought it'd be cool to have a Thomson to match my post if I were going go get a shorter stem. Now that I see the Sunline...I'm not quite as concerned about matching it exactly. The Sunline looks pretty tough in comparison. I like the style.

I'm not so sure that I agree about 10mm making much difference in my situation. I can see your situation running a 50mm...10mm would make quite a bit of difference. I'm running a 105mm Easton and the jump to 90 or 80 would be equally welcome. I used to think my cockpit felt short when I had a hardtail and switched back and forth between the two. Now that I only have 1 bike...it feels normal. When my 1 bike was down for repairs for 2 weeks...I borrowed a POS rigid MTB with a pretty short/upright cockpit. Now that I'm back to mine...it feels pretty roomy. I know that whether I choose 80 or 90mm...I'll get accustomed to it and it will feel normal.

I think I've pretty much made up my mind. I just can't find any reviews on them anywhere.

Hell, then if it's just based mostly on the aesthetics, then yeah, get whichever one looks best to you. sounds like you're sold on the Sunline. That's what some part purchases end up about in the end!

Me, I think the Sunline is kinda' fugly compared to the Thomson.

And yeah, its' just a stem. Similar bar and steer tube clamps. I can't imagine one being functionally really any better than the other.

That's where the "me" part of what I said comes in. If you like it, buy it. I sure know that my bikes are pretty damn fugly to some people!

I can't imagine it being a bad stem in any way.

I used to have a Funn Serial Killa Stem on a bike it was short and low rise and I loved the look and the way the bike responded with it. Don't think they still make them though

^^^Did they just change the name of the Bearhug HD to Syncros FR. Mine looks identical to the FR but all black...

Edid: Oh wait, the clamping is all different.

And I'm not quite sure why. I liked the hidden fasteners idea. I'll have to ask Marshall why he changed that.

Well the name change was for the better...bearhug hd doesn't sound too gnarly.

Holds more significance in grizzly country. I think they're trying to achieve more consistency through usage lines with the naming - FR stem, FR wheelset, etc.

As long as it's the right size for you, I doubt you'll regret buying either one.
